Can I Stretch My Stomach? Not Sure If I Should Be Worrying..

Recommended Posts

I have always been a fast eater. I am 35 days PO, and in my soft-foods stage. As I am moving away from pureed food I am finding it difficult to 'freestyle' with non-measures foods of varying density. The result is that I get the pinch associated w/ being full when I eat. Over the last week this has been happening alot.

I am not gorging or anything like that, but I am having difficulty finding my 'full signal' and as a result I am finding it easier to fall-back to the foods I know like an OIKOs, Soup or string cheese, which is always 6 oz. and does not give me the pinch. My question is whether the pinch itself is the signal (mild, temporary discomfort) or if relying on the pinch could lead to me stretching out my stomach in the long term.

I am at the beginning of it all, and I do not want to begin forming negative eating habits all over again. Anyone else come against this?

Thanks

I don't believe you have to worry about stretching your stomach at this point. However, you may want to measure your portions to try to determine when you first feel thet "pinch" and then next time stop eating a little before you hit that point. I will be a year post op on August 29th and I can definitely say that this takes time. Just take it slow and test out new foods cautiously. It's like learning to eat all over again. Try not to stress, your body will tell you when you are moving to fast. Hang in there and remember that eventually you will be able to enjoy all or most of your old favorites again, just in smaller portions.

Good luck and God Bless!

Hugs,

Shell

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
