Please Tell Me How Many Calories I Should Eat At This Point.

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am 12 days post op and am averaging about 500 - 600 calories per day. I am feeling a little weak at this point, but I am more concerned with the long term effects of such restricted calories. I don't want to mess up my metabolism any worse than it already is. I'd like to know when it is appropriate to add more calories in. I started full liquids today. Can you tell me how the progression of increased calories goes?

Thanks,

Lorna

I'm 3 weeks out and I'm hitting 350-400 calories. I don't think you are going to mess up at your metabolism at this point. I spent my six month pre-approval doing 800 calories a day and hitting 80 grams of Protein and staying about 45 -60 grams of carbs a day and I lost weight, gained muscle tone during that time. That's pre-surgery with a regular sized stomach.

I think you would be pushing it to try to get in more calories. I'm still on liquids.< /p>

The body will use up the carbs you are using for energy and there are plenty of fat stores for the body to have to burn through before you start messing up your metabolism and blowing through your Protein stores. This should not even be a concern at this time.

ps I think most people stay at about 800 calories a day until they are in maintenance and those that are extremely athletic may go up 1200, but on a whole, maintenance is about 1100.

I am sure there are several people that will disagree with me but I had surgery on 03/01 so I am about 3 1/2 months out and I rarely take in 600 calories. I try to focus on Protein and eat as balanced as possible but I refuse to start the habit of force feeding myself or eating when I am not hungry. I have lost 79 pounds so far and have 39 pounds until I reach my goal of 110. You will feel weak and tired for a while but then your body adjusts to the new level of calories and you will start feeling better.

I am 6 months and still can't get in 800 calories a day. I am 12 lbs. from my goal and doctor said until I reach goal, stay under 1,000' but I can't even get close!

Agree 100%!

I'm 6 weeks out tomorrow- down 40+lbs- and I'm the same way.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
