Will gastric sleeve really put diabetes in remission ? I'm a RN and I taken care of several post gastric bypass patient who have been able to come off all their diabetic medication within a few months of having surgery. I'm hoping I get the same results with the vsg. My Dr. seems to think that the bypass is gold-standard if I want my diabetes to go into remission. Any diabetic out there who had the sleeve, what's been your experience?

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 2 years ago. My numbers weren't horrible, but I was on metformin 500 mg in the morning and 1000 mg in the evening. I stopped my metformin during my pre-op diet since it was so few calories & was told not to start it again after surgery, but to keep checking my levels. I'm 5-1/2 weeks out now and am down 33 lbs from my high weight before my pre-op diet and 21 lbs from surgery. My sugar levels have been awesome since surgery. My fasting level is still about 110 instead of below 100, but it's not bad enough to be on medication. My after food numbers are around 110-120 consistently.

I have a friend who had metformin and insulin. She is still not completely off her insulin, but she said she's taking about 1/4 of what she had before. She's hoping as she loses more weight she'll be able to come off completely. She's only 4 weeks out now.

That good to know, I'm hoping this surgery has some positive effects on health, especially my diabetes. My mom passed away at the young age of 42 due to complications of diabetes. This is my true reason for wanting to have the surgery. I feel like a ticking bomb, if I don't intervene now! Thanks for your comment. Congrats on your weight-loss!

before i was sleeved my surgeon told me the sleeve doesn't always get rid of diabetes - the longer you had diabetes the less chance you will be rid of diabetes. (completely) I've had for 20 year

But dr still said i might be rid of the diabetes, or at least improve.

I was sleeved 12/15/11 - hospital stopped my medicine until i go to my PHP - when i saw my dr. he told me to stay off meds. he monitored me periodically, my numbers are good, but not as low as we wish.

will find out soon if i have to go back on lower dosage of meds.

My surgeon told me the exact opposite. He said the sleeve WILL 1. completely reverse the diabetes/send it into remission or 2. the patient will drastically decrease the dosage of diabetes medicine. He also told me that all of his patients with diabetes completely stopped taking medication within a few days post op! Also, I know someone who had gastric bypass and her diabetes was reversed almost instantly. She gained all of her weight back plus (we're talking over 100lbs here) and she still DOES NOT have diabetes. She's also an RN..Go figure! lol. There are lots of articles out there that discuss this. I believe a combination of the WLS, diet & exercise will completely destroy this disease! I have not had the surgery yet but I cannot wait until the day this disease is out of my body for good. My surgeon reports statistics that are pretty equal to bypass surgery. I do have a friend with diabetes who had bypass surgery last year. She recently learned that it did NOT make her diabetes go away... but will surely lower her medication requirement. Still a win!

I am type one but wish I could get off insulin. Unfortunately I can't. But my doctor said I'll more than likely be taking way less insulin to get it under control. I can't wait.

I was pre-diabetic and my A1C was 6.5 and the doctor was rolling around the idea of metformin for me and thought it might help me with weight loss. Since my surgery on April 3, my A1C is 5.5. So my pre-diabetes has reversed. As someone else mentioned, my dr stated most cases of diabetes reverse because there are several hormones that are released by the stomach that research think are responsible/play a role in the development of diabetes. The sleeve isn't a 100% guarantee your disease state will be reversed, but it should certainly drastically improved if it doesn't. As far as statistics go and what I have read, RnY and sleeve are about the same in regards to diabetes reversal or improvement. In my case, it was reversed. Good luck with whatever decision you make. I choose the sleeve because of lower risks of malabsorption issues and the possibility of diabetes reversal!

Post surgery, six months ago, hospital took me off my diabetes medication, including insulin.

I was told to see my PHP one month after WLS to check how i was doing with my diabetes. PHP told me not to take meds until further notice.

PHP rec'd lab results for A1C today, 5.5 woohoowoohoo

also taken off blood pressure medicine
