Picture Of Bougie Size Comparison

Recommended Posts

I had a long discussion with my surgeon about bougie size. It has little to do with the final size of your sleeve. The bougie is simply a tool to allow the surgeon to see inside of your stomach. The seal can be made very tight or loose in relation to the bougie. The surgeon makes a judgement on that based on the size and shape of your stomach as well as other criteria. There is so much misinformation passed around here as fact.

I have to do some research as my surgeon said he's found greater success and less leaks in the larger bougie???

According to my surgeon, they used to use between 28-60 in size but now he only uses a 38 because it has less complications with success.

Even if it was a 60 though compared to our old stomachs...very small

What is this bougie for? As my perop appointment is tomorrow

The bougie sizes are used as a guide for the doctor when removing your stomach. As far as getting a "bigger" or "smaller" sleeve the difference between the ALL bougies sizes are really very small..

Your doctor will know what is right for you!

Everyone's stomachs are different some are small, some are long so even two people using the same size bougie can have different capacities after..

And as far as "getting one as small as you can"

If your stomach is made to small there is a greater chance of long term problems.

they used a 60 bougie on me...is this too big?

I will say i didn't think to many doctors use a sixty anymore. I'm surprised yours did, but Plenty of people have, in years past had 60's and managed to lose!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
