I know we have to sip liquids. Do we ever get to drink small amounts and not sip all the time?

I'm almost six weeks out and I can drink reusable and some times even gulp without a problem. I've never had a problem drinking. I sipped for the first week and then was able to gradually increase so I can take larger drinks now. But I know some on this forum can't do that. Everyone is different.

thank you! I didn't want to have to carry my baby sippie cup around with me forever :) I don't think I know how to sip without it.

Yes you can :) I'm 8 months out and I drink "normally" again. I do have some limitations though... I used to be able to easily drink a bottle of Water... I can do maybe 1/4 at a time. If I drink too much I am uncomfortable for a few moments, but then it passes and I can drink again fairly quickly.

Sipping is really the best way to drink though, because it allows your body to absorb everything you put into it. When you chug or drink large amounts at one time, your body is more likely to just pass most of what you are drinking on instead of absorbing it.

Yep, I drink normally, too. I can't really remember when it started but you'll eventually heal enough. Wait it out, though. Big gulps of a drink early on are painful!

I pretty much drink normally again as well. It's really helpful on a hot day or when you haven't had a drink in a while! Though I have found out that I can't take more than three gulps in a row as it tends to make my stomach feel weird and sloshy.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
