Sound Off On Post Op Appetite

Recommended Posts

OK people. I am getting close to takeoff and I am passing my time reading posts and trying to set an expectation..

Maybe its also bc I am a week into pre op diet and have the peaking appetite, but I gotta get this question out, as I do not seem to be getting a specific answer in reading.

Are you feeling hungry on your post op low caloric intake diet? I am not asking about being bored of fluids and wanting to chew, and I am not talking about smelling the neighbor's grill or the family's dinner. I mean hungry. Are you?

Not asking for any guarantees, but it would be nice to hear about how genuine hunger is diminished and a sense of satiety is happening (or not happening) for some of you.

Thanks

/F

I am a week out and not hungry or craving any food at this point! I am able to get the protien in and Water that I need, I am on a full liquid diet and have no desire for anything more than what I already take in. I think the constant intake of water may be helpful, it's as if there is always something in my sleeve. I hope this helps!

Everyone is different, but I'm 8 days out from surgery and still on Clear Liquids. Yes, I'm getting tired of clear liquids & am looking forward to more variety soon, but NO I am not hungry. My family eats regular meals every night & I'm not interested in them because I'm okay on my clear liquids. I haven't had any true hunger since surgery. I haven't had any head hunger either. Again, everyone is different though.

Do I feel hungry (7 weeks post-op)?

Stomach rumbling actual hungry? No.

Head telling me how good 2 orders of garlic chicken, large fried rice, 3 eggrolls and a pint of ice cream would be appropriate hungry? Yes.

IMHO- after surgery (with a few exceptions) its mostly head hunger-hungry and not something you physically feel. And lets be honest- if you do still feel PHYSICALY hungry, after your post-op diet, you can pretty much eat whatever/whenever you want. (Wouldnt reccomend it, but its physically possible).

I still had hunger, just not as much as before, and of course I fill up alot faster then I used to. I am 9 months out now and I still fill up on about 1/2 a cup of food. I definatly get hungry though. I have noticed that I can forget to eat at times though, if i am distracted. good luck! :)

I am out 6 weeks and I get physically hungry if I do not eat or DRINK for 3 hours. But then I eat 1/3 slice of pizza or 5 spoonfulls of Soup and I feel SO full, I have to stop or else it's uncomfortable. U only need to feel the full feeling once and you will never let yourself overheat again.

I'm five weeks out from surgery, I'm on mushy foods now and have been for the last 3 wks. with one more to go. I do get hungry, sometimes really hungry right down to the pit of my stomach, but as soon as I start eating after about 10 min. I'm full and cannot eat anymore. My nutrionists told us that we should try to eat every couple of hours so that we don't get too hungry and cause us to overeat. However, that is not always possible or practical, but I don't see how a person can overeat, because it makes it makes me nauscious to want to take another bite.

I was worried about the same thing before my surgery and wondered whether I would be the person that this thing wouldn't work, because I love to eat and a really good cook. I come from a large extended family and love to cook and wait on them. I love to see people enjoy my cooking.

Good luck to you,

Dawn

Starting weight 227.0 lbs.

Surgery 4/16/12, height 5'3.5"

Current weight 198.2 lbs.

I honestly get hungry like before. I eat when I'm hungry. Big difference now is I am full and satisfied on (for example) 1 small slice of pizza not the entire thing!

I am one month and 4 days out and immediately Post Op, I did not experience true hunger, but I did experience head hunger. Now I can tell when its time to eat, there is a "empty feeling", usually 2-3 hours after my last meal and at least 1 hour after my last beverage. On average, a few spoonfuls but no more than 1/4 cup and I'm full.

I get hungry. And yes, sometimes I let myself get too empty, like when I have long meetings. But even taking a drink of Water eases this feeling. I never expected hunger to completely disappear. I mean when your stomach gets empty, it's going to tell you. Just know you'll fill easy, and as long as you choose the right choices you'll lose weight.

I am 6 weeks out & honestly I have lost my appetite. I have to remind myself to eat. I eat my 3 meals a day & 3 or so oz totally fill me up. I hope I never get my appetite back!!

I am a week out and I am going through the same thing. I am meeting with my doc tomorrow and I am going to ask to advance to soft foods!

I am almost three weeks out now. I didn't get hungry until this week, but I started back to work and while I'm eating about every three hours, i feel hunger before dinner. I think it's because I am drinking all the time during the day, but tend to not drink driving home (I have a little bit of a commute) and then I'm getting dinner ready for the rest of the family and I'm pretty famished by dinner time. But, 1/4th cup of food and I'm usually full.

Most of the time not hungry, but when you are just a little fills you up. But the first couple of weeks I wasn't hungry think it was the swelling on the stomach.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
