Straw Question

Recommended Posts

I was told no straws but wonder why. I accidently used a straw a couple time while out but nothing adverse happened. I wonder too how long I need to follow this no straw rule?

Help Anyone. :)

Search the site (upper right hand corner) for keyword straw. It is a much belabored topic.

Quick story on it, though, is there are some people out there who do not clear the straw of air before swallowing the liquid. They also swallow the air with the liquid which adds gas to the stomach which can be painful. Then burping ensues with stomach spasms and ... well ...

I am an air-clearer myself, so I loved my straws, but not all of us are professional straw users, so the medical profession advises not to use straws.

If you find you are like myself, then straws should be OK, otherwise, don't use them.

This has come up a few times. There are a few reasons, and reasons often vary - and not everyone has a straw restriction.

Generally it's one of two things. 1) people tend to drink more/larger mouthfulls with straws. 2) straws are full of air until you suck the air up, followed by the beverage. That air is feasibly swallowed, and excess gas in the stomach can be uncomfortable or (hey claim) stretch the sleeve out. I'm sure there are more reasons out there.

My documentation says no straws, but immediately under it says that if they don't cause problems for you, you can use them. Well you're already using them if you know whether or not they cause a problem, so -- that's just silly.

I always use straws. I've always preferred drinking wth one vs. an open cup. I've had no problems from them. I was a chugger so they actually help me drink less at a time. And if you're worried about swallowing the straw's air volume, just open your mouth first. It's not like our mouths are empty, any more than the straw is, before we swallow. So why the straw air is any different than mouth air... my nutritionist can't answer, and I don't get it.

Gah you snuck in while I was typing so now I look just brilliant enough to type virtually the same answer. ;)

I was advised not to use a straw right after surgery. It's easy to suck up to much air, That wouldn't feel good. I did start around my second month using a straw and testing to see if there would be any issues. I haven't had any problems with taking in to much air or feeling bloated. Now, at 3 months out the majority of my fluids are drank with a straw, to me it feels like I can drink more by using the straw. I use the insulated cups that come with a lid and straw, I have a ton of these.

I have used a straw from the very beginning and have never had any problems from it. As a matter of fact, it is the only way that I can even come close to getting my fluids in.

I just met with the Dr. yesterday and the NUT, I was told that it used to be that they recommended no straw but the thinking has changed and now it's whatever you can tollerate.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
