Question about tightening/ after a fill

Recommended Posts

Hello All...I have had a tough week. I was filled last Thursday 8/10 and forgot to do liquids right away. (2.25 cc's) I experienced 6 days of barely being able to sip Water and tossing up everything I tried to eat, even Protein Shake. I called this morning for an unfill...and had a very open day all day! It almost feels like I have less restriction now than before the 8/10 fill. My question is, could I have slipped and now have less restriction? I tested it and did have an issue with a mozz stick (thats how good I was feeling.) Or is it possible that like those who wait for a week to be restricted, I got restricted right away and then loosened up naturally? I don't know if I should go get my unfill tomorrow, I feel great now. Does it hurt when you slip?

Thanks for your help, I read this board all the time--it is a great source of info,

I'm not a Dr but I play one on TV. *snorts* Not really, um.. but my thoughts on this would be that because you didn't do the standard 2 days of liquids after a fill, you may have caused some swelling that added to your restriction. Since you have had a week of stress on your esophagus with all the "tossing up" I would suggest you stop now and take a couple of days to let things settle again. I don't think liquids are necessary, but certainly mushies would be a good idea. Then, once you are back on solid foods, see how you do for a week or so. If everything goes well and you feel you need more restriction, then get more. However, if you start experiencing more problems, contact your Dr and get an unfill.

And then, there's always the chance that you'll find yourself with a decent amount of restriction. In my opinion, too many bandsters jump to have adjustments made to their fills before they've even followed the basic guidelines for proper bandster eating. How can anyone know if they need a fill or unfill until they've done that?

Anyway, check out this checklist once you are eating good solid food again:

Hello,

What you are experiencing is the normal post fill swelling, MOST doctors have patients do liquids and mushy food for about 2-3 after a fill. If you do not you will experience pain and possible vomiting. You could very easily cause obstruction and repeated vomiting.

ALWAYS treat each and every fill like you just had surgery...aka taking it easy and eat soft liquids and mushy foods after a fill.

Also each time you ever vomit you should always do liquids and soft foods for at least a day to let things calm down and heal. You don't want to end up losing your band do to unnecessary frequently vomiting.

Take Care

I had a fill done on 8/23/06. It was difficult and painful seeing the doctor didn't seem to find "spot" easily. He only put 1cc in on that day. I feel a little more restricted but can still eat everything just takes a little longer. Yesterday I was shopping, got really light headed, hands started shaking, sweating, and lightheaded. I had to go and eat something immediately or I felt like I was going to faint.

First off, should I call my doctor and ask if they could put in more saline? I have not lost anymore weight since the fill and I am always hungry.

Second, has anyone ever felt lightheaded and needed to eat like that? I have heard of "dumping" but I thought that was only with the bipass surgery.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I went today for an unfill. Got my second fill on 7-19 and had great restriction.Seemed the more I lost the tighter it got until it was so uncomfortable until I finally called for an appointment. It had finally gotten to where I could'nt eat at all. Lost twenty pounds but god. They thought I might be swollen from cutting my one small pill in half rather than crushing, which the doctor had told me it was okay when I was banded.

They say sometimes if the pill does'nt go through it will just sit there and irratate the stoma. But I have been doing it the same way since April and never had a problem. I will start crushing the pill but I came home this afternoon and ate without a problem. First time in over a week. Who knows. She took out .5cc and left me with 1.3. I have 20 more to go so will see how this works and if not will have a little more put in.

Mefuller, I have had those same symptoms, but not since I've got the band. It was due to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). I seem to be doing much better since I got the band and have to watch what I'm eating.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
