I Thought I Was Ready But...

Recommended Posts

Had VSG on 4/20 and have already lost 20 pounds. Problem is I'm hungry and want to eat real food. Protein Shakes are a little more tolearable, and have progressed to soft cheese and yogurt. But I'm wanting something more substantial. Am worried I will not be able to sustain this stage of pureed and soft foods a full 6 weeks more. Anyone else had that problem?

Hello,

I have not had my surgery yet (6/20/12) but you are doing great! You can eat soft puree food for 6 weeks you do not want to injury your stomach. So drink plenty of water/protein shakes you can have soft fruit or try mashed potatoes in a week. When you feel like you are hungry take a walk the exercise will help in your recovery.

Please do not give up!

I pretty much tested a lot of different foods when I was at your stage and found I could tolerate more than just pureed foods. Don't stray too far from very soft, mushy stuff and don't sample anything in quantities of more than a tbsp or so in case your sleeve rebels. Your sleeve will tell you what it can and can't tolerate. Eating real food is one thing, but you'll never be able to eat "real quantity" like you used to enjoy. I've developed a sort of "what the heck" attitude about food because I eat such small portions. Food is just not a big priority anymore and a big, juicy steak is not in the foreseeable future for me, ever. Sigh...... BUT meeting my weight goal is finally just around the corner. 6 more pounds and I will no longer be considered obese!

Thanks for the support and ideas. I know I'll be needing lots as I go along.

One thing to always keep in mind is that prior to having the sleeve (which I don't have yet) if you wanted to cheat on a diet... well you just cheated and there were no consequences. This is different and you need to constantly remind yourself of that. You could do some serious damage if you try to eat the wrong things too early. The risk of damaging your sleeve by trying too much too early is not worth it. 6 weeks now... a lifetime of happiness!!! You can do it!!!!

Try watery grits with a bit of butter spray. I had a few days where my sleeve was really grumpy but I could get the grits down. It was one of the yummiest things I had ever had, lol!

But a nice petite filet may still be in your future! My wife got a "prescription" for that from her surgeon after complaining about having difficulty with ground beef; we still refer to a trip to Outback as refilling her "prescription". The sleeve helps reset our priorities to quality over quantity.

You are right about testing small amounts of new thing - that's one of the hallmarks of our doc's program which is otherwise on the liberal side of things progression-wise. I was able to tolerate more things more quickly than my wife could when she went thru this a few years ago - YMMV

Congrats on your pending "overweight-edness"!

I have noticed too that only 11 days post op and I miss " real food" sometimes or I see the family eating a nice juicy burger and I am a little bummed that I'm still eating Jello ...but I went and bought a really cute small dress and jewelry to match and when I get that bummed feeling I walk in their touch it and think soon you will wear this !!!!! Sometimes it helps

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
