Anyone else for the bonus plate of band + hiatal hernia?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I was banded just last week... August 10. When I woke up in recovery, I found out I'd also had a "huge" hiatal hernia repaired. I'm in a lot of pain and was struggling with vomiting for a few days. That of course PANICS me more than anything. Would love to hear from others who dealt with recovering from the bonus plate. I've really been struggling with the hernia component of this... The port pain's nothing relative to the pressure and spasms I'm having around my esophagus/diaphragm. I'm also finding it hard to differentiate band vs. hernia.... Thanks for any feedback/encouragement. Kelli

Hi! I too woke up with not one, but 2 hernias! The surgeon could not believe that I had been going along like this with no symptoms! My recovery has been extremely un-remarkable. I was banded on June 30th and the only thing the extra surgeries has impeeded me on is that I am not allowed to do any upper body strenght training or exercising yet until after my next visit to the surgeon.

Hang in there. I feel very good and even better than I did before surgery.

I had a hiatal hernia as well. Only thing I can tell diffrent was I was in a lot more pain than others seemed to be. But I did not have any nausea from it and I was told that anything I felt up to doing was ok, except heavy lifting. I looked at it as a bonus, a free surgery :)

Hi Kelli, I was banded last NOVin TJ Mexico by Dr. Ariel Ortiz. I had a hiatal hernia repaired with the band placement. Dr. Ortiz asked me about reflux in a preop visit and I said not much. I realize now that I really did have quite a bid of reflux.

NOW- I never have indigestion type symptom's. I had one pain shot right after surgery and that was it and did not experience any hernia repair related pain. I know that probably does not make you feel any better does it?

I had a great experience. I had very little port pain, no gas pains, a little pain in my shoulder that was gone in 24 hours. It just seems we are all so different.

Did you ask the doc about your pain? I wish I knew more about it. I just wanted to let you know that I did not experience what you are going thru. Hang in there. Maybe when you get thru this pain you will not have any reflux and will get to enjoy that bonus benefit.

Kay

Hello,

I too got the 2 for 1 special. I was banded on Aug.9,2006. I had more pain immediately post op in the hospital. the surgeon said it was due to the esophageal spasm. Although, he said he would take care of the hernia if he thought it was necessary before surgery.

Prior to surgery, I had reflux problems, heart burn every day. But my doctor had put me on Prevacid and that cured the acid indigestion.

Since surgery, I have not had any reflux. I never even took One prevacid post op. So, thats great! Off one medicine. I am now 8 days post op. I don't have any pains or vomiting. Sometimes, I can't burp when I need to. But, I'm doing good. Heck, I even went out last nite and pulled some crabgrass out of my landscaping and other stray plants out of my garden. You know everyone is different. I thank the Lord everyday for such an uneventful recovery. I pray that you too will become pain free soon. Take care and remember everyone on this site is glad they had this done. Thats what I tell myself over and over again. Maybe one day it will sink in HA HA!

On my second banding(after slip), I had a hiatal hernia AND an umbilical hernia repaired. I really couldn't tell anything different about the hiatal hernia but that umbilical thing HURT!

I received my tests results back from the motility and esophagram tests, and all was well except for a "very small" hiatal hernia. Would someone be able to give me some more information on this? Also, how does a small hiatal hernia affect your health and your lapband?? I spoke with the bariatric coordinator about this and she know very little about it. I was told that it would be fixed during the lapban surgery...

It's good to have it fixed. I doubt you'll notice the difference, but un-repaired hiatal hernias seem to correspond with slippage later on in some cases, so I'd do it first time around, just as a precaution.

hi,

I was just banded 8/30/06 and have been having reflux problems for years. I was also just diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus which is a pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus due to chronic reflux. My doc thought I only had a small hiatal hernia but after surgery came out and told my husband that the hernia was much larger than he thought it was initially. What was the most wierd was that the first thing I noticed when I woke up was the fact that I no longer felt like my stomach was in my chest! I am 2 days out and am having gas pains and pain in the port area but have had absolutely no reflux! Wonderful!

I was also banded by Dr Ortiz and after surgery he told my husband I got the 3 for 1 surgery. He repaired a hiatel hernia and a diaphragmatic hernia. He asked my husband if I had any chest pain or shortness of breath because he said I had a "fistful of intestines" in my pleural cavity. For the record I attributed the shortness of breath to being fat. I received one injection for nausea post op and never had any other problems or pain. I did feel tightness at times but that was all.

Holey Frijoles! I've been looking everywhere to find someone who has had the 2 for 1 special! Although I'm paying $2300. extra for the hernia repair. (Now ain't that special!) Doc says my hernia is small. However, I have had it for 20 years. So I've been so frantic:nervous trying to find someone who had been through both things at once before I have the surgery.

I am not great on the computer  so I must have just missed KelliW's subject line. This has been most helpful to see that most of you haven't had any real problems post-op or down the road. Except, of course, KelliW.

I had been told prior to the pre-op Upper GI xrays, that if my hernia turned out to be a large one, the LB was not for me. So for your surgeon to have come upon it during surgery must have been out of the ordinary. Of course most of these docs don't all have the same approach.

It is probably not too surprising that you have more work to do to get everything you had done all healed nicely. At least there's lots of support here and encouraging words. I am sure going to be thinking about you and wishing you well!!

Be sure to call the doc if you start vomiting.:nervous

Thanks for the encouragement! I am 3 1/2 weeks out and feeling so much better. I'm on the "mushies" diet and still trying to differentiate between band and hernia repair in learning to eat with the band. I occasionally get the "golf ball in my chest" feeling after a few bites of some foods but I am not seeing a pattern in terms of chewing, rate, amount, etc. With that said, I don't think I'll be eating eggs anytime soon... I stopped vomiting (wretching, but no food coming up) once I found a way to get the pain med/muscle relaxant down. I have had a few instances of PB-ing (I think that's what it is... the golf ball, then the food comes back up but there's no wretching) on the mushies. I may wait an additional week before starting solids.

Thanks again for the encouragement. Kelli

I too have just been diagnosed with a small sliding hiatal hernia. I don't know much about it and I hope my surgeon Dr. Robinson of Boston will still consider me a good candidate for the surgery. Guess it is more common than I thought.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
