Questions To Ask At My Consultation

Recommended Posts

So I have a consultation on Saturday with the surgeon that I am hoping will be able to do my sleeve. Where I live there are no pre-op workshops or info-sessions and not a lot of support afterwards really. I have kept in touch with a great support group of sleever friends whose brains I will be picking soon but I also wondered if any of you have advice, tips etc for burning questions I should really ask my surgeon.

I will be self-pay ( insurance pays for zilch for me) and I am hoping he can do it at the very beginning of July when I have time off work. What info do you think I'll need to be aware of apart from the basics like what emergency medical backup he has, pricing, what he will do in the case of complications, and what his pre and post op diet, exercise and recovery recommendations are.

Any thoughts peeps? I am a little nervous so my brain has left the building.

Here were a couple of questions I asked my Dr...

What size bougie does he use?

Do you use staples, stitches or both?

How long will I be in the hospital?

If self-pay do they do financing?

I asked a bunch of other questions, but cannot think of them all right now!

Good luck!

Thanks NJsharon!

Sadly they don't do financing...*sigh*

The bougie question and stitches/staples are good ones... adding to my list!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
