Do You Think How A Person Felt About Their Body Before Makes A Difference?

Recommended Posts

Do you think the outcome of how one sees themselves before surgery plays a part on how they would feel after? I keep hearing how people feel like they don't see the skinny them after losing so much weight?

I've always been pretty self-confident, of the "If you don't like me, don't look at me" school. I'm still having a rough time getting it into my head that I'm WAY skinnier than I used to be, though. I think I carry myself well, but I've still got a long way to go to feel skinny.

IMO, overeating and being overweight is the result of something deeper for a majority of people ... not all ... but a majority. So, those issues won't go away just because you eat less.

Part of the pre-screen process is supposed to be a psychological analysis into some of our eating issues. Do I have a grip on mine? By no means, but I am working on them, but they're not so far out as to have prevented me from getting sleeved.

The sleeve is not a cure all and not a magic bullet. Those who think it is can be severely disappointed.

I have to agree with PDX on this. Most people are obese because they have other issues and are addicted to food. Being sleeved only works on our tummies. The head work is up to us. They sleeve our stomachs, not our heads, to paraphrase one of the gurus from the Lap Band Boards.

I think that those who are most successful with the sleeve are those who realize they have food issues and step up their game to deal with those issues. I see a therapist to help me deal with mine. Others may have success with other methods, but I believe we MUST figure out the underlying issues in order to avoid self-sabotage.

I didn't word my question right. (My comp was dying so I was righting as fast as I could.) I mainly wanted to know if how a person felt about their body before surgery, does it play a part on how they say themselves physically after? Example: I have never said anything bad about my body. Of course I'd like to lose weight, nip and tuck, but I just have never said things like I'm disgusting, no one would want me etc. I have heard (not from this forum) but have heard people I chat with in the past and present that has said such awful things about themselves. So what I want to know is, is it possible for a person like me, that has been rather confident about my body become unhappy with it, and not see how far I have come in the future? I was watching someones video on YT, about body dismorphic disorder. She lost tons of weight after WLS. So I guess I'm asking how many men/women see all their hard work?

Well this is definitely psychological as far as self-perspective. Just like your skin when you lose a ton of weight, it takes a lot of time for it to adjust to your "new" body, well your psyche is the same way. After being big for so many years and suddenly losing a lot of weight, mentally you still tend feel like you're still big person because your daily life cycling activities haven't caught up to the new yet. In other words, when you start living like a small person physically, your psyche starts to believe it also.

I am a firm believer, Kiki, that we all "dislike" our bodies pre-op, because if we didnt most of us wouldnt be here right now. But to clarify, our level of "dislike" varies from person to person significantly. Some of us dislike certain parts, others everything.

yes, there is possibility that you may not like the new you that will blossom, but you have to understand that with every lb lost or gained, we change, because we notice it and that can have both a negative and position effect depending on which side you land on.

Me, on the other hand i have a goal to reach and a physique to achieve. So i will have no choice but to work hard to lose the weight then work harder to build muscle to achieve my body's true potential, well at least get close enough to it lol

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
