Heartburn/gerd Before/after

Recommended Posts

Was just wondering if you had heartburn before surgery - do u think it is worse after?

I've had the worst heartburn and acid reflux (3 weeks away from surgery today) and hoping after surgery with the restricted eating occurrences will decrease?

What has been your experience?

I have never had heartburn before but after surgery I did! They put me on Prilosec every day for the first 6 months and...not one time have I had heartburn since. Give it a try, It will work. Best of luck to you!

Hi. The only time I had heartburn before surgery was when I was pregnant. It started about 1 1/2 weeks after surgery and is relentless. I hate it.

I finally called the doc yesterday and they called me in a perscripton that seems to be helping so far. From what I understand, it's common with the surgery.

I didn't have heartburn aka GERD before my sleeve. I now take 2 PPI's a day. I guess it is a small price to pay for this sleeve. I really does work. Get an Rx or OTC if you have s... insurance.

I didn't have heartburn before surgery. I took a PPI for seven months post-op and then stopped; I'm 14 months out now and have had heartburn twice since, both times eating too close to bedtime.

My heartburn and acid reflux started after my 3rd week. It's with anything I eat or drink. I have a once a day Pepcid rx but obviously it doesn't work well enough.

My dr said this will pass in about a month and it's been two and a half weeks so far & I hope he's right!!!!

I guess this is something I will have to ask my surgeon - I already have crazy amounts of heart burn - hope this won't increase it

Had it pre-op & it's worse post -op for me. I take Carafate liquid 2x/day and Omeprozole 2x/day and need a Gas X strip every now and then.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
