Feeling Sickish Pre-Op

Recommended Posts

Could use a little help/advice. Started my pre-op diet (2 Protein Shakes and one protein/veggie meal per day) last Monday. I'm supposed to be on this for 2 weeks. Surgery on March 26th. Today is Saturday, and I'm feeling dizzy, nauseous, weak. Is this normal? Feels pretty crummy and I'm concerned about how I'm feeling now and what this means about how I'll feel post-surgery. Any advice??? For the record, I'm 61. Thanks for your help and thoughts!

What you are feeling is normal. Its a detox...really. get LOTS of rest. I haven't had surgery yet. But my first meeting with the NUT she advised me to stop drinking my calories like, juices and sodas and sweet tea. And also gave me a few more things to accomplish. So even though I am not on the pre-op diet yet, my eating habits have changed considerably. She wants me to get my BMI below 45 so that I only have to do the pre-op diet for one week versus 2. I have been at it for 10 days and already met and exceeded goal. That being said, I felt like crap the first few days....same symptoms you described only on a smaller scale and she warned me this would happen. And she says its times 10 when you are on the pre -op diet but its normal. Your body is adjusting and detoxing....rest and hydrate....rest and hydrate....good luck!!

I have experienced all of your symptoms too and I think for me it was some dehydration. I have realized that the only way I am use to drinking large quantities of liquid is a couple of huge cokes through a straw. Since I havent had those now, I have made myself get 2 32 ounce G2 gatorades in a day and Im feeling better. My Protein Shakes curb my hunger pains some but for the most part its willpower. I can tell when I run out of steam and I have to stop and give my body what it needs. I have become much more in tune with my body this last week of liquids than I have ever been before. Makes me realize what a true machine it is and how what we put I it effects how we feel. I have also had to rest a lot more this week. Just dont push yourself too much and hydrate and nourish. I am taking a lot bubble baths, internet surfing, etc. to divert my attention from the onslaught of food commercials, signs, etc. Amazing how we are surrounded by the message to eat everywhere in our life!! But it is getting easier to ignore a little more every day.

For me, the dizziness, nausea and weakness were from too little sodium. I also had a severe headache. I drank a 1/2 cup of chicken bouillon and felt better in an hour. Good luck

Thanks for your advice. I upped my Water intake today and added some salt to my food, and I'm feeling better -- not terrific but better. I'm glad all y'all are here to help!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
