Ran Into A Sleever At Work!

Recommended Posts

I was at work today and was making small talk with the patient's mother when she made an offhand comment about having "80% of her stomach removed" a few months ago. I almost popped an aneurysm! I was like, "YOU GOT THE SLEEVE!? ME TOO! HIGH FIVE!!!" WLS is not as widespread in Canada as in the US, and the sleeve in particular is a bit of a dark horse - only surgeons seem to know about it. So this is a rarity and very exciting! It's the first time I've come across a sleever IRL (not counting meeting with people from this board).

That's awesome! Did you have a chance to talk to the sleever about your journeys? Or is that frowned upon at work?

I found it very cool that several of the nursing staff at my hospital had been sleeved by my doctor. During my pre-op workups and my actual hospital stay, I had several unsolicited recommendations of my doctor by people who were at, or close to, goal. It was fantastic! :)

Was at the hospital for preop yesterday and when the admittance clerk saw my paperwork, she whispered "Girl, you are gonna LOVE it!" Turns out she just had it done herself - and she looked great! Really eased any minor anxiety I was having.

That is so awesome. I haven't had that happen yet, dunno if I ever will. Sounds like you were very excited, im happy for you! It's always nice to meet people that have similar things in common. It's a nice surprise for the day. Like finding a 10.00 bill on the ground LoL

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
