To Barf, Or Not To Barf?... That Is The Question.

Recommended Posts

I am still learning my sleeve too. I prefer to barf rather than be in an hour of pain. It has only happened a few times and it is usually when I am eating without paying close attention to my signals. You take that one bite too many and you are like UGHHHHHH!

Yep I vote for barfing too, as much as I detest it to. It's just not worth the misery - and it is misery for sure. One benefit is that it is only possible to barf up a tiny amount because that's all that's there because of the small sleeve capacity. I have only had to do this a few times now - which is still too many times as far as I'm concerned.

Oh man had a piece of banana. Pouch hates it and now I am paying for it. What the heck is the foam all about??

"The foam" is what we call slime. I had to look it up on VSGtalk to make sure nothing was wrong. If you eat too much, which isn't saying much, your stomach doesn't have room for the stomach juices that rush to break down your food. So, it just comes up. You have to eat SLOOOOOW. I take 30-40 min. to eat. But, if you take 1 bite too many, there just isn't room. I just use a cup and spit. I know TMI, but just being real. It will pass after 1/2 hr. Much easier than hurting. To me, it's not the same as throwing up, it is sliming! Hope this helps.

Well, I'm laughing/feeling sorry for you all at once--I'm in the "barf" camp, too, even though I absolutely HATE to do it. I haven't had to do it for a couple of months now (yay!) so I'm hoping that maybe I have a handle on eating slowly and CHEWING properly. I'm obviously a slow learner. :-)

I can tell you that you will continue to get those ICKY feelings well after surgery. I ate something last night (a mayonnaise-based salad dressing) that my sleeve did NOT like--usually I try a bite of a new food and see if it's going to be okay, but I just ate the salad, and when I was about 2/3 through my small portion, I realized I was NOT going to make it through the rest and I was feeling that same old "sleevie hates that food" feeling. I actually propped myself up and made myself relax enough to sort of doze off in order to avoid the nausea and "I have to throw up" feelings, and it stayed down, but it was a challenge. If this had happened a few months ago, I'd have barfed for sure; so it seems like maybe one is able to have a bit more control over things as you continue to heal and things get easier.

Hang in there! One way or another, it's all a learning process.

Sorry that this is gross...

I just ate too fast, for the first time... about 3oz of cottage cheese and a little peice of turkey. I have the foaming, burping, pain! But I refuse to barf. I hate barfing. Am I doing damage by holding it down? I know if I step in the bathroom it will come up... To barf, or not to barf? that is the question.

NOT TO BARF...just can't do it LOL

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
