Ppi And Stomach Acid Questions. Please Help.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I am 5 months post op and have been taking nexium. I am getting really worried about the long term use and bone density issues. I have noticed that my joints and bones are aching like never before.

I am wondering if anyone has been able to successfully stop taking ppis and how far post op they were.

Also has anyone had any experience with pepcid or zantac?

I stopped at 7 months. I had tried to stop at three but reflux came back so I took it three more months. The last month I skipped a day for a week, then skipped two days for a week, then three, and the last week I went without. Tapering it off seemed to work better than just quitting abruptly the way I had the 3rd month. I did not have reflux issues before surgery.

Since then (six more months) I have had 2 nights that acid has woken me from sleep. I just take a Pepcid and in 30 minutes I can go back to bed.

Try dropping every other day and see how it goes, if OK then drop 2 out of 3 days and if still fine then drop it for a month. Be sure to keep your RX on hand so you can resume if the acid comes back.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
