Chewable Vitamins Vs. Liquid

Recommended Posts

I am pre-op and just gathering information. I have been wondering something. Why do so many people use the chewable vitamins instead of liquid vitamins. Is it because your surgeons reccommended it and feel this is the best option? Is it because your new stomach can't tolerate the liquid Vitamin? I would think the liquid form would be easier going down. Could someone shed some light on this? Thanks!

I took Centrum liquid vitamins the first 2 weeks after surgery. Tasted awful but I did what I had to do lol. Now I'm on Rainbow Light Prenatel Vitamins from whole foods.

Oh okay, I got you. So the taste is what sucks! I actually take them now just because I hate trying to swallow pills. But I'm thinking that could change after surgery as I hear a lot of you saying taste buds change and maybe my stomach won't be able to tolerate them. But if I can take it. I would be willing to suffer through them. I don't much like gummie anything. It just feels all slimmy to me, LOL.

I absolutely HATE the chewables that I bought prior to surgery. I thought I was so prepared by trying them ahead of time, but they have become so gross. Between the Multivitamins and the Calcium (each large tablets), the Vitamins are hard to manage, and represent too much of my solid intake. I bought the Celebrate brand.

The Multivitamins make me feel nauseous. I try to take them, but I have to lay down afterwards, unless I take them with some food, like a spoonful of cottage cheese. It's still a battle to keep it down.

The Calcium used to make me nauseous, but are less troublesome now. They are still gross.

As a compromise, I take one Celebrate Multivitamin, and try to get in two calciums, each day. But I am back to my liquid multivitamins for the other dose. And, I plan on phasing in the gummies, although I will likely cut them up.

Big, chunky, cloying chewables don't work for me long term.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
