Sleeping On The Sides..?

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 weeks post op and still not able to sleep on the sides. The largest of the four incisions on my stomach is on the left side and whenever I try to sleep on the sides, I start getting an uncomfortable feeling.. not exactly pain but I still get very uncomfortable and have to sleep on my back.

I'm not used to sleeping on my back -- I've had asthma trouble from my early teens and have not been sleeping on my back for nearly 15 yrs.

So I just wanted to ask you guys about when it started to feel comfortable for you to sleep on your sides..

Maybe you need to buy a long body pillow? or try any regular pillow on your belly to see if that helps….

Hi There, I felt like that after I got my band...and then again after I had it removed (yeah :D )...hopefully I'll be sleeved soon. Anyway, it helped me to use a pillow under my stomach when I slept on my side. Kinda reminded me of being pregnant but I was able to be comfy and sleep. I think the pillow helped to relieve the pressue on my abdomen.

Hope you get some good sleep soon!!!

Vicki

I'm sure this swings wildly from person to person. I'm only 6 days out and I am laying in the bed part side/ part stomach right now. My stomach on the bed relieves the pull in the incisions (I never had pain). If I lay more in the side to back position, I need my body pillow snug to my stomach for support.

I also thinks it varies for each person. I have to sleep on my side there is no way I could sleep on my back. So from the first day I came home I have been sleeping on my side. I would say try a body pillow. Or even a pregnancy pillow that kinda curves around you. Maybe try a really flat pillow under your belly while you are on your side.

Thanks for all your replies. I'll try the pillows soon.

I'm 3 weeks post op today and just this weekend I (gently) rolled on my sides to sleep. AAAAHHHH! My back has been cramping up so badly from sleeping exclusively on it. I have a pillow on each side of me. When I roll on my side, I shove a pillow under my belly for support, and also under my bum/hip on the other side so I don't feel like I'm going to roll back (or straining to stay on my side). My big belly was hurting and feeling like its weight was pulling on my internal stitches, so the pillow really helps. But I can say that, at 3 weeks out, I feel like I can roll around better and finally get comfortable. Hang in there! You're still healing.

I had the same issue. I hate sleeping on my back but that was the only comfortable position for about 2 and a half weeks. Tomorrow is three weeks post-op for me and I'm finally starting to be able to sleep comfortably on my left side for awhile (my biggest incision was on my right side) and I can lay on my right side for a few minutes. I do use the pillows, but I use them more to elevate my arm and leg so that I don't collapse in on my abdomen. But, even that gets uncomfortable after awhile. So, I'm still mostly on my back but its definitely getting better little by little.

a pillow definitely helps. even if its not a body pillow - something to support your stomach.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
