Gout- Has Anyone Dealt With This?

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who had her sleeve on December 19th and is not too computer savvy. She has had three bad flares of her gout since the surgery and it is really hampering her progress as she cannot exercise!

The pharmacist who filled her rx for gout medication noticed she was buying Protein powder and said that was probably causing her gout. Does anyone know about this? She asked me to do the research on my groups as she knows I have a lot of support systems. (Yay for that!)

The thing is- if she is not able to eat a lot of Protein ...well that wont work either!

I have gout and was advised by my Dr that there is a very good chance i will experiance some flare ups post op. He advised me to have my medication handy and to be taking it daily. I dont remember exactly why but he said it had something to do with all the changes that your body is going through

In my informational material, it says gout can flare up due to dehydration. She needs to increase her Fluid intake and see if this helps. Good luck

Fluid is very important to dilute the uric acid buildup that can cause gout. whey Protein powders won't have anything to do with gout, however, collegen protein powders can. Make sure she's buying a quality Protein Powder. Secondly, Beans are typically high in purines, which create uric acid - if she's eating a lot of beans for protein or organ meat (another culprit), have her cut those out and go back to lean meats for protein along with a quality whey protein.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
