Some Questions From A Newbie

Recommended Posts

I was just sleeved a week ago yesterday. The reason I am an odd bird is that I am pretty close to my weight and I am a vegetarian.

I so far have lost 18 pounds in a week. I have gone back to work and resumed most everything despite the complications that I had(I had a leak during surgery that made them have to tube me and also put a drain in me).

My problem now is that I can barely eat anything. I've learned to drink Water, G2, and tea to stay hydrated. I do my b-12 and Multivitamin in the AM on the way to work. But the only things I can mange to eat are Jello(I know not vegetarian but I caved), Ensure, and greek yogurt. Almost every Soup makes me feel sick. I've been told my stomach is extremely small because of the misfire of the stapler which cause the leak (he basically took my stomach from 90% to 85% because of the leak). The fluro looked great so the nurse just told me to keep trudging on(in a nice way)

Any advice would be great. I have never thrown up but feel super duper sick anytime I eat anything but the above. Today I managed 5 bites of Tomato Soup and and to stop, same with cottage cheese which I still can't belive is a full liquid.

Thank you!

try ramen noodle packets in Water - just the spice packets - it seems a bit easier on the tummy while it is still healing. Hope that helps!

How about some kind of broth? I know you said your vegetarian, but you do need some Protein. Tomato Soup could irritate your new stomach. You are really not that far out from surgery, I would suggest to just do the best you can and make sure what you eat is really nutritious. Get lots of Fluid, protein, maybe Unjury. ;)

You're only a week out so everything you are experiencing sounds normal. Each day will be a little better. There are a few other vegetarians around the boards. I will not ever claim to be a total vegetarian, but do have meatless meals several times a week. Way more often now that I have been sleeved and am working hard to eat healthier in general. Putting so little food into this huge body make me want to be sure that whatever I put in is of the best nutrition possible.

I have been looking more and more into "clean" eating. But as long as I am still trying to lose there are a few "diet" foods that I refuse to give up.

Hang in there. It WILL get better. For now the most important thing is to get in enough liquids to keep you from getting dehydrated. Worry about the Protein and stuff later.

Well I have a question. I haven't been sleeve yet, but wanted to know how long does the average person take off from work. I have a total desk job with mimimal lifting.

First off let me say "18lbs. in a week?! WOW!!" That's amazing! Now as far as the vegetarian food. I'm affraid I'm of no help since meat is what I was craving the most after surgery. Sorry, but best of luck. Keep up the good work!

Maybe you could try diluting your Soups. The first week out I was told by my doctor to dilute my juice and broths half and half with Water.< /p>

Unbanded - when you said that you were out for a week. Was that a 5 or 7 days week? The reason why I am asking is because my surgery is schedule on a Wednesday and I was wondering if I would be okay on Monday to return back to work.

I had surgery on Tuesday and went back to my desk job for a 1/2 day Friday. I was super tired but had I not had the complications I think it would have been no problem. Hope that helps

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
