I know that you are not supposed to drink form a straw right after having the surgery, but for how long? I miss drinking from a straw and I sometimes forget and do it anyway. Does anyone have any advice for this?

I started at about 3 or 4 weeks out. It was waaaaay easier to for me to get all of my Water in when I used a straw. I personally found that I didn't get tons of air through the straw, which is why they don't want you to drink from it!

I drink my Protein through a straw, its the fastest way for me to drink it without gulping, (I hate the protein shakes). When I see I am nearing the bottom I take the last sip without the straw to avoid sucking air. I started with the straw 1 week after surgery.

I too use a straw, not everyday though but if I'm treating my self to a skinny frap, no other way to drink it w/o a straw. I just started without noticing.

I use a straw for my Water. It is easier to get my water in and I don't find myself gulping extra air.

I have been wondering this same thing. I am one week out and find drinking through a straw I take smaller sips so I don't get as much air and I am able to drink a lot more. So glad I found this because I have read that we are not suppose to drink through a straw.

Go for it. Just be sure you're still sipping through it and not sucking it down too quickly. I've also found that I can't/shouldn't drink the last bit from the cup with a straw. When it starts to slurp I take in too much air and that makes me uncomfortable.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
