Okay so I have just gotten a surgery date for the VSG. I am excited and nervous. I don't have many supporters which just makes things a little worse. But in the long run it's my decision. I am low BMI (37). I am 5'2 and weigh 206lbs. I've made the mistake of mentioning to 2 or 3 close friends and relative what my plans were and of course they respond by saying you are not big enough to have such a surgery. Meanwhile, I am only 37 years old, I have GERD, a hiatal hernia and high blood pressure. So the health issues and the fact that I can't walk up a flight of stairs without gasping for air are enough for me to have made this decision. Technically I am 75 - 80 lbs overweight and while that might not seem like a lot to some, I am short so it's tough on my heart.

Anyway, this forum has been very helpful today. I've been reading often before I registered and you have all been great!

I'd like to know if anyone here experienced sagging skin after weight lose. I here that toning and drinking Water helps with skin elasticity. I'd also like to know how much weight came off within the first weeks of surgery. I guess dropping it off so fast concerns me.

Thank you all in advance for your responses.

I was about the same weight and close to your BMI when I had my VSG. I didn't see the point in waiting until I got fatter - it'd just put me at risk of developing health complications and would result in more loose skin after VSG. I knew I was only going to get bigger, not smaller, if left to my own devices, so I figured, I was by no means "too small" for WLS.

I have a small amount of loose skin, but it's pretty inconsequential. You have to make peace with the idea that you will NOT look like an 18-year-old cross-country athlete who's never had an ounce of fat on her body, but you will look a zillion times better than you do now. The only area where my loose skin is in any way noticeable is on my inner thighs - where I carried most of my weight. If I run, you can see the "waves" of skin going up and down my thighs, but otherwise, it's not very obvious. I just avoid running in very short shorts, haha.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
