You are saying that he says he supports what makes you happy. If it were me, I would accept that as good enough (unless you don't believe him and you think he is going to nag). I don't think people have to agree 100% to be supportive. He supports you and he may or may not come around later. I'm sure he is just worried about his kid.

I just told the ladies in my choir about my surgery because when I walked in they were dumbfounded at the change in me after only 3 weeks. They said the surgury took 10 years off me. They said they were proud of me for enduring the surgery in order to better my health.

My mother has the same hangup your dad does, only worse. She won't even back down in the face of obvious evidence.

Also, explain that you are not having your stomach removed, just reduced. Once fully recovered, you will still be able to eat and carry on life as you did pre-VSG, just with more controlled portions. The surgery is merely a tool to help us live a healthier lifestyle.

Stomach, still there and functional.

Pyloric valve, still there and functional.

No re-routing of intestines or anything. It is all there just as it was before.

Tell your dad that there are a lot of us who wish we had the surgery at a young age like you. I wasted so many years being miserable because I was fat.

Toooootally! I would have had it done at 29, LOL!!!!

Just told my dad that I finally have a surgery date - (APRIL 2nd whoo hooo) - and his response was "oh, you're actually going to do it?"

wow.

He said he didn't agree with what I was doing, but he'd support whatever makes me happy. His whole argument is why permanently change something in your body that's part of a system you use every day? It's not like removing tonsils or a gallbladder that you don't need, but part of a vital organ that you use all the time.

I get it. he's concerned. I just don't want to get into a back and forth with him, or any of my family for that matter, but I feel like I could use some helpful soundbites that worked for anyone else as they were telling friends and family they were going through with VSG.

Any suggestions?

thanks =)

I notice you are in SO CAL...Come to one of our meetings so you can both meet us in person and hear all of our stories. He can also ask questions as well. We have one gal that is 22 years old in our group and should will be sleeved very soon. Let me know and I will send you an invite :)

Ha! No worries! I'm sure there are great groups up here too, I just haven't joined any yet =) Seriously though, this site is the MOST valuable tool. I feel like people are really honest and open here, so it's been a HUGE help.

My Dad also tried to talk me out of surgery. I told him that I loved him, but that I was not asking for his permission. I was only asking for his support.

Today, now that I am 10 days out of surgery and seem to be recovering perfectly, he called and told me how happy he is for me etc.

It became clear to me today that he was just worried about the surgery and me coming through it ok.

christin, thanks for the feedback. I'm sure my dad is in the same boat - just nervous about coming through the procedure ok. I know that when I am healthy, happy, thin, and fit, that will show him it was the best thing for me, and he'll be on board.

best of luck on your recovery and the awesome journey ahead =)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
