How Much Time Should I Take Off Work After The Surgery?

Recommended Posts

How much time will i need to take off work after surgery?? Will i be able to go back to work after the procedure? I'm a Medical Assistant and my job is not very physical. Do you think I can go back to work right after the surgery?

The time off constraint has a lot to do with mental acuity. You might be taking a lot of naps in the beginning. I did.

I have a desk job that is as inactive as it comes. I returned to work on day 11 post op. I could have returned before, but I was out of town for my Dad's birthday.

I had a very easy time recovering from surgery. I had no pain and took no pain meds at all. Check with your doctor for recommendations.

It really depends on you and how your surgery goes!

I had a wonderful surgery and hospital stay. basically NO pain, just discomfort. I went back to school on day 5. I also have a desk job. (High School Secretary) and only worked 1/2 day the first 2 days back, but could have stayed all day. Now, I was tired when I went home for that first week.

I also really think it is your personal attitude! I have a fairly high pain threshold and was determined to make it as smooth a transition as I could. Since everything went smooth for me.. it was easy. BUT, every surgery/person is different.

I took 2 weeks of medical leave. I based this on my recovery from gall bladder surgery a few years ago. I felt fine after a week with that one. This one I wanted a little extra time to get used to the new food requirements etc.

I'm taking as long as I can simply because I work in a call center where I can't leave my desk whenever i may need to and am only allowed a certain amount of time off the phone aside from my 30 minute lunch and 1 15 minute break. (they even monitor the time you use in the restroom) With that being said I am going back early if I Have no problems.

I had my procedure done on a Thursday and went back a week from Monday later. I was phsically able to do that, but the biggest mistake I made (as a teacher) was not getting in enough Water once I went back. Whenever you go back... DRINK YOUR WATER ALL DAY LONG. Work at it. Hard. It will make all the difference.

My doctor recommended 4 weeks and my job where I am constantly moving and on my feet approved of my time off, they're giving me 5 weeks off and then another 10 days when I go on vacation to Disneyland yayy!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
