I can't personally answer this question yet, as I have not had surgery, but one thing i found when doing various diets: When you are off of sugar for a while, things with natural sugars taste more delicious than ever. Certain fruits start to taste like candy. You gain an appreciation for food in its purest form. Even carrots become delicious. When our bodies are still screaming for refined sugar, it's hard to imagine, but it's true. A banana can become a heavenly thing!

BTW, Tuttle, have you perked up any? You were pretty low the other day...

Well since we can't have the sweets we used to eat what kinds of things do u substitute it with

I think it's up to interpretation and how far out you are from surgery. I definitely overdid the sweets this holiday season & need to work off a few pounds. BUT, if you are careful and limit the intake (easier said than done, I know!) ... you can still indulge every now and then. That was the one reason this surgery appealed to me so much. After healing and weight loss, you can eat like a thin person - they indulge occaisionally. Up until the past holiday, I incorporated sweets into my meal plans - and it worked. Just keep note of the meal "plan" and don't let sweets come in for unplanned snacking.

sweets are ok every now and then, i am just afraid i will get that sugar monster going again ;( Then i will talk myself into it all the time. LOL

Right you are Moon Siren... here is my latest - sugar free apple cider - hot with caramel flavored Syrup = caramel apple. Try to make that a bad thing!

Sugar-free Wintergreen Lifesavers have been just that...lifesavers. Over Christmas, my Best Half bought me one sugar-free raspberry truffle from Rocky Mountain chocolate Company. I nibbled at it for a few days, then gave the bulk of it to my youngest son. My tolerance for sweets has really decreased since being sleeved.

I was never a big sweets person pre-op, so I don't worry too much about overindulging in sweet things. I allowed myself tastes of things during the holidays without overdoing it.

When I was newly post-op, I ate sugar-free popsicles and fudgesicles for a sweet treat.

I love fruit too, I bought some good oranges at the store, I also like good sweet grapes and I had part of a peeled apple last night. Since I'm not militantly low-carbing it fruit is a good go-to snack for me.

I have found I don't have room for sweets after eating my Proteins and veggies. I am not a sugar free person-nor a no sweets person. So when I do indulge it is the real thing and just one bite or so before bed. That way I'm not tempted to have more. It is usually one bite of ice cream or a 25 Calorie piece of a specialty dark chocolate.< /p>

You really should be careful about allowing yourself anything pure in sugar. You really want to get yourself focused on sticking to your meal plan and if you start allowing yourself treats from early on, you will likely experience longer stalls and slower weight loss and that's if your carb monsters don't take over. It would be better to wait at least 4 or 5 months before you allow sweets as a treat back into your eating to be sure you have a handle on what your body can handle.

Personally, anytime I find that I have a treat with high bad carbs/ sugar, I pay for it with a 1 to 3# weight gain which comes off but only after getting back on plan for several days or even longer in some cases.

Just be careful. You need to try to approach this with a new attitude towards healthy eating.

The sugar-free (SF) Baskin Robbins ice cream-flavored candies are really good, and I don't think I've ever had a bad SF butterscotch or starlight mint.

The SF Jell-O Delights come in chocolate and creme brulee and taste really decadent. They're like a pudding mousse and are in the dairy section. I've also seen them at costco.

I like SF puddings, from the shelf-stable to the refrigerated, to the instant to the cooked. Custards are good, too, if you like to cook, because you can use fat-free half & half instead of whole milk and Splenda holds up to heat. You can even make a true creme brulee with these substitutions because it only takes a tiny sprinkling of sugar or fructose on top to caramelize.

For cakes, Cookies and other things, look up high-Protein recipes online and play around with the fat and sugar content by making reasonable substitutions. I'll be posting some of my recipes when I find the article where they belong, and I have a good one for chocolate Peanut Butter fudge as well as delicious Protein Bars.

Oh! One more thing that's easy - make meringue cookies! Just heat the oven to 350F, whip 2 egg whites until they're at the soft peak stage, add a pinch of salt, 1 t real vanilla and 1/2 C Splenda and beat to the hard peak stage. Pipe onto a silpat or parchment-lined baking sheet, place in the oven, turn it off and walk away for 2-3 hours or until the Cookies are crisp. Do it on a dry day or they'll never turn out right. Egg whites are the purest Protein, the one against which all others are judged, so this one has to be good for you!

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
