Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Protein?

Recommended Posts

Hope you all had a great Christmas!

I am only Two and a bit weeks out and have no problems drinking. All the instructions from the nutritionist were about cramming as much Protein as I could in the early days. I am still on full liquids so I have low fat milk and a number of Protein Drinks throughout the day. I usually stop counting after the 70 g protein mark. Today I looked in this and I had 700-800 cals and up to 120g Proteins. Is there such a thing as too much protein? Should I cut down?

I too had to look it up and found a pertinent article through Google: http://www.daveywaveyfitness.com/nutrition/8-side-effects-of-too-much-protein/

The article mention needing 0.4 grams per pound of body weight, 0.6 if physically active. That seems to fit in for most people but seems like too little for people with lower body weights.

Thanks Rootman! With 0.4g/lb, I need 125 grams per day, so I need to aim a bit higher rather than lower for the moment.... great!

My NUT told us there is such a thing as too much Protein and to aim for 60 - 80. If we go over occasionally that's ok But on a regular basis increases ketones and can affect your kidneys

I just had labs drawn and my kidney levels were all screwed up . My nutritionist says how much Protein you need goes by our height.

Yes there is a such thing as too much Protein. The best way to judge how much YOU need is to get this information from your dietician or nutritionist. The answer is always changing too. Take care of yourselves!! Xoxo

Thanks everybody! I have recently asked my nutritionist who said not to worry about it as it is short term. At this stage (5 wks post -op), I need to focus on taking in ENOUGH Protein to ensure proper healing. I guess that is what I pay her for so I will take her advice and stop worrying about it! :)

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
