How Long Before You Recovered From Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

im having a lot of pain today. i threw up after taking an antibiotic prescribed by my surgeon & that pain is nooooo F!%^*KING joke! how long was it before you felt some what recovered? like you could bend over with no pain.

It is interesting how everyone seems to have a different recovery rate. I was sleeved the same day as you and it was rough trying to get anything down, and I did have very bad gas pain for the first two days. But that is all gone now and I am climbing around like a spider monkey! lol I have no abdominal pain whatsoever and really never did.

yeah... it was on the right side of my mouth both top & bottom lip was busted on the inside. my roommate too! but a friend who was also there for the sleeve didnt get her lip busted. it wasnt nothing major or an issue. it didnt hurt & wasnt noticable but it was some what swollen.

That sounds like an anesthesia issue. They tape a tube in one corner of your mouth, I think? I didn't have that either but I did get dry lips so lip balm was much appreciated.

i knocked out at 8:10ish... & woke up in recovery at like 10ish. i think its like 1.5hrs. good luck to you! itsdef not easy & while going thru the healing process, i can find a billion & 1 things to complain about but im sure a lot is off of emotions as well. i think a support syatem is highly needed & im not talking about someone to call or text.. im talking about face to face. my support system is small so i think it has an emotional toll.

I am so happy to find your post here i have seen your videos in you tube and now i found you here. I'm pre-op I go see the surgeon on 1-5-12 surgery date 1-18-12. I am still nervous it is major surgery and who knows how your body is going to react. I reside in Tampa Florida. My surgeon is Dr. Alfredo Fernandez.

How long was your surgery?

i just cant wait til it goes away. :(

Congratulations on your sleeve JASleeve. Please rest, take your pain meds, sip and walk when you can. It helps so much in your recovery. Before you know it, you will forget the pain. It will take some time but, getting fluids in will help you.

Take care

Are you taking little sips and allowing them to go down? Are you on Clear liquids? Did they give you the little one oz measuring cups to help you gauge your intake? Those really helped me.

The best thing though, was the bariatric coordinator's advice to change my posture - to put my shoulders back and stick those boobs out, head straight up - and that helps things move smoothly through the new little stomach. Man, I wish I had seen her earlier. That didn't fix everything immediately, but that was the beginning of the end of the terrible pain of day one and two!

I am here thinking about you and hoping things will get better. Try the posture thing for sure.

man oh man.. i knew there would be pain. i knew it would be like my gall bladder but worse (since gall bladder is only 3 incisions) but last time i was with my ex who catered to me... & i was able to eat whatever i wanted!

i think thats the biggest struggle. not only are you in so much from the surgery but you cant even turn to food for some comfort. although I DO NOT regret surgery but it does make me emotional. :'(

Are you allowed liquids or just Clear Liquids? I went home on full liquids... I found Tomato Soup helped and yogurt... Fage greek yogurt sprinkled with a little splenda... Would have died without it!

I really hope you feel better soon! Once you see the weight loss you'll forget the pain!

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury makes a chicken flavor Protein powder. It tastes a lot like the broth from Ramen noodles. It is clear when made up and it will help you get some of the Protein. I feel for you right now! I totally went through what you are going through now. Just rest while you can. Soon enough real life kicks in again and it's time to go back to work or whatever you do normally... And THAT is the harder part!

I really wish someone had shared more with us how it would feel. The physical, mental and emotional.

Eeeee, I'm scared now. :s  I go in February. Is this a typical recovery reaction, or IS there a "typical?" Anyone?? Anyone??

Sorry it's so hard J. I pray the healing speeds up for you.

I am so worried about you. If you don't get better you'll have to go back!

Like I said, we were sleeved the same day. I am still doing clear too. Can you look online at the sites for the Protein powders and get some ideas? unjury has some recipes on their site, one example is Jello. I did that today and it worked great. Now I am trying it with crystal light.

Please try something and control your pain. Suffering is not going to help you get better! Thinking of you!

If you read through the forums it is crazy how many different reactions there are. I think most people are doing okay after the first few days. My friend who had it done had no bad reaction at all, but she isn't on the forums.

If you want to do this, just realize that the odds are in your favor that you will make it through this. Maybe take your friend or husband with you to be your advocate and ask tough questions of your surgeon and to be your second set of ears. Ask the surgeon what he or she is going to do if there are complications and see what he says, are they going to be there for you if it isn't going well?

Well you know that you cannot put the Unjury in liquid above 130 degrees or it clumps. I have a kitchen thermometer.

I couldn't taste or smell the Unjury and the texture was unaffected.

You have to mix the Unjury with the cold Water (use a whisk) and mix the sugar free Jello with the hot Water and wait for the hot water to cool a bit before mixing them together. And then, chill until firm. It is cloudy but there is no smell or taste.

If you were to eat a box of jello in a day, you would get 20g of Protein. I am going to try it with extra Unjury next time.

I am sipping on plain Unjury in Crystal Light right now, and I am not so impressed. I don't really care for the smell. It isn't terrible, but if you have an aversion to it smell might be half the battle.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
