I have some medicine cups that I got from the hospital I think they fill up to 5 cc which is a teaspoon- That was my sip size for about 1 week- When I felt like I knew what it was on my own- I no longer poured it in and sipped- I drank right from the vessel I had (water, shake , cup etc) IT is hard @ first but the moment you accidently GULP you will immediatly know WHY they tell you to sip- it hurts like a you know what!

I never had a problem with gulps. I dont take as many gulps as I used too and I fill up fast but I can take gulps with no pain.

Upp until about 2 and 1/2 months post op I wasnt able to gulp....but now I can gulp and quinch that thirst again. That was one thing that had me down for a while because I just dont feel like my thirst is quenched without gulping and I am a huge Water person. Nothing else quenches my thirst. Thankfully once the swelling went down this was resolved.

It will get better :)

Felt the exact same way, felt like I could "gulp" earlier than I thought, maybe 4 weeks post op...but maybe gulp isnt the write word...I would (and do now), take a big drink swallow, take another big drink and then swallow in increments (prolly 3 swallows)...but I have felt from early on that I was able to drink much easier than "advertised". I asked my nurse (also post op) and she said it was all ok, your body will give you the best feed back if your doing something wrong...

I can drink normally right now and I am almost a month out. I can't gulp like I used to, but I am able to drink enough when I want to. Sipping just was never my thing, but I did sip for at least a week I think, just to follow the rules.

i think everyone is different it really depends on how your body heals.. just listen to what it tells you cuz i can assure you if your body doesn't like you doing something it will let you know. you will feel a lot of pain and bloating. lol.

Im actually less than 2 weeks out and i can already take large "gulps" of Water, but i honestly think its because my body responds differently to surgery than most since ive already had 4 knee surgeries, my body just knows what to expect and recovers accordingly.

i mean 3 days ago i couldn't even tolerate Water, now i have no issues at all.

So again it really depends on where your body is at in the healing stage. take it slow at first and when you don't get that bubble feeling or pain when you sip then you know you can do a little more.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
