Banded over a year and having trouble!!

Please help! I don't know if anyone out there is having similar troubles but I can't seem to eat many healthy foods without ending up with a sliming incident. And it can happen after a bite or two. Right now I am subsisting on mainly Soup and yogourt. (I have even had incidents when eating some of the thicker soups.) I am feeling sorry for myself and so I am eating junk. I love cakes, Cookies, chocolate and more chocolate. The funny thing is, even with the band I have little trouble eating those things. I have been banded over a year and have had a lot of trouble with it. I have had small fills (less than 1 cc) and after a few weeks I have had it removed as I could not progress beyond a soft diet. I had to be completely unfilled for about 4 months and put on 15 lbs., which thank God, I have lost most of. <img src="images/smilies/happy.gif" border="0" alt="" title="" smilieid="60" class="inlineimg" /> It seems that I am so irritated after a fill that it can take a month for the swelling to go down. Most of my friends do not know that I have had the surgery and they think that I am bulimic!!! Sigh...and the weight loss is so slow.... I don't regret having the band because I saw how quickly I put the weight back on when I wasn't filled but I sure wish I could figure out how to manage it. The smaller the fill the more foods I am able to eat and the hungrier I am. The tighter the fill then I can't seem to eat anything except the junk. Does anyone have any suggestions

Have you discussed this with your MD? Maybe an esophagram would give you some answers?

I found my visits with my nutritionist and psychiatrist a big help. I learned that "junk food" seems to travel through the band with absolutely no problem. The band is merely a tool to help you make better food choices. It doesn't carry any magical ingredient that will make you not want chocolate..that I know of anyway. This has got to be something you decide for yourself. I have only been banded for a week and am absolutely no authority on the subject, but I'm learning hat wise food choices certainly do fill me up as much as any junk food would. Fortunately, or unfortunately, as the case may be ice cream is my vice. My surgeon suggested I take a tsp. with my medication and that has satisfied that craving and seems to be enough for me. I think telling people they can't have something makes you want it more. I've given up my carbonated drinks...gosh what more do they want from me  and that was the most difficult thing I've done. I'm now using Sensation in my Water and have myself convinced it tastes like soda pop.

A lot of the band is in the mind. It will work well for you if you commit youself to following the rules, although at some point lots of people slip just once or twice. Tomorrow is always another day to get on track with. No one is perfect, but strive to eat the things that you know are good for you and will fill you up. Thankfully chocolate has never been my thing, so that doesn't bother me a all.

Good luck to you.

Thanks Dody and Elisabeth. I have had many visits with my doctor and many xrays, tube down the throat etc., to determine if there is a problem--either with the band or me. Frustratingly, there doesn't appear to be anything except my reaction to fills.

LOL...and as for the junk food...even though I love it, I would prefer not to eat it...it seems to be the only thing I can tolerate that gives me any sense of being full and takes away the hunger. I am trying other foods but haven't had any consistent success with them. I can eat 1/2 a chicken breasts one night and the next one bite sets me off. I think that stress has a lot to do with this, as well as the later I eat the better I can tolerate it.

hey cathyb...yah, I suggest you discuss in detail with your Drs and get some action...but it seems you have already done that.

You KNOW the junk will go down easy. So you have to try and stop...plus it won't give you a full feeling.

Something has to be done though....the one thing my docs state is that you MUST eat "normal" food....in other words....do NOT have only soft food (like you are doing). he says it will NOT help you lose weight, it will make you eat more and feel hungrier....not to mention it isn't healthy.

Who were you banded by?

okay, JUST when I was feeling confident ( my first day of cottage cheese) and I am being banded August 10th..I read this poor girls claim about probs with food. oh oh, and geeze don't tell me guys you can still eat chocolate ARGH., I love that stuff..lol and I heard we cannot take carbonated anymore as far as fluids ..why? what happens? I was talking to Nisrine at TBLC and she says she likes Long Island ice teas too sometimes and there is pepsi in it, she thought it was just ice tea......NOPE. Anyway I hope you sort out those issues and can eat without difficulty again.

Yup....beware Kim...chocolate goes down EASY. So you still have to have "control" and try and eat wisely even when you are banded. Why? Cause chocolate can be chewed easily into really soft liquidy form and can be swallowed no problemo.

KIM>..if you do a search for the topic of pop/soda or carbonated beverages you will see several threads come up that you can review. There is lots of info on this site wrt that exact question and you can glean everyone's opinion on the matter.

Some docs say carbonation is okay; others don't. (even at TLBC, the docs are split on this). In my opinion, it comes down to whether or not you can tolerate it. I love my caffeine free diet pepsi and gave it up for about 3 mos. But, I'm finding I can tolerate it fine....so I have a sip here and there. I normally ingest about 2-3 cans a week when all the sips are combined (whereas before it was 4-5 cans a day).

I am a wee bit north of you (Barrie area)

Hey Kim,

Carbonation is a gas which expands. You drink it, the gas begins to expand and, if you're not careful, shoots straight back up and out. If you do drink it in small quantities and it goes past the stoma, when it begins to expand you'll feel like a balloon being blown up. I haven't done it because it can cause damage but I've read other post which describe the feeling and, frankly, I don't like fizzy sugar Water enough to go through that. I will say that there are some people here on LBT who drink soda and report not having a problem with it. The doctors says it's bad, people report it hurting, the science supports the expanding balloon theory so . . . pass thanks.

Just to take the opposing view....diet pop isn't sugary and so it isn't drinking empty calories....there are ZERO cals in my diet pop.

Also, I have to respectfully disagree...not all doctors say that carbonation is bad. Yes, non diet drinks (ie. not diet coke) is bad and they will agree to that (empty calorie thing) but docs do not agree about the issue of carbonation at all. All in all, studies have not supported the "stretch the pouch theory" based on carbonation. BUT, that being said...absolutely, do what is best for you. Naturally, if you chose to not drink it...that is great...for others, they may choose not to drink it because it feels icky but for others, there are no bad feelings with it....I just want to ensure ppl hear both sides.

The band is so strange. This morning I was able to eat Breakfast with no problems (turkey sausage). My lunch which consist of tuna and grilled veggies just took me 2 hours to eat, no lie. Maybe you need to take it very very slow and take smaller bites, I mean baby like. Could it be your trying to eat to fast. Proteins are more dense and it takes more concentration to get it down (and patience).

Sorry to hear about your problems.... hope this helps. :huggie:

Thanks for all the support. I have been struggling with this for quite a while but I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from being banded. I agree that the junk food has to stop---and I have made a promise to myself to start eating better. I realize it may have to get worse before it can get better. I am so hesitant to eat anything because I don't want to start sliming and I have to stop that. There are foods that I haven't tried that I should. Interestingly enough, I tried cucumber today...convinced I would have a major issue and no problem!!! The good news is I am not gaining weight even though it is really slow at coming off.

Oh...and as for soda...I can drink it no problem. Go figure!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
