I had my surgery on thursday, December 8th. I had a drain put in during surgery. I have a follow up with my surgeon on wednesday, but I was just curious as to when on average the drain stops leaking?? I emptied it this morning after sleeping and there was 2 tbs of liquid, now the tube is getting clear and the drain is slowing, is this normal? The drain site is kinda pulling and is sore....confused5.gif

Yes it sounds good. 2tbsp overnight isn't very much and clearer drainage is what you want. It doesn't have to be completely stopped for your Dr to remove it.

I get mine removed tomorrow!! WOOT WOOT!! I HATE MY DRAIN. My drainiage goes red, then clear red, then clear in the tube but clear red in the bulb. My surgeon says as long as its not cloudy or milky yellow, green, etc. The clear is what you want. I can't wait to have it removed, a little nervous too.

I had mine for 8 days and it pretty much filled up with reddish clear liquid twice a day for the whole time. I just emptied it morning and night and tucked it into my bra during the day. Doc took it out on my first post-op visit after I drank some blue stuff to see if there was a leak. He had my lay back on the table, take a deep breath and then he pulled it. I thought it felt like the downward trip on a roller coaster, but it wasn't painful.

He put a large band-aid over the opening and told me not to take it off for three days. When I took it off, there was a scab, but it's pretty much healed by now. I have some pink skin there, but it's not a bad scar. I did make sure I left the scab alone while it healed.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
