So........ I Have A Dilema And Need Input....

Recommended Posts

My one year anniversary is coming up and I am running my FIRST half marathon the day after ( feb 25). I live in Vancouver Canada and the race is through Disneyland. My overweight hubby has decided that he wants to take the leap and have surgery as well ( OMG YAY!!!!- can u tell I'm excited??????) anyways, I had my surgery in Mexico ( a hop, leap and a jump from Disney) and my hubby wants to go there too. My dilemma is this......

The race is on the 25th. The open surgery dates are the 16th to the 18th. If all goes well and he has surgery then, will he be up to seeing me run? he really wants to cheer me on and has said he'd rather see me run and figure out surgery later, but........ I don't know!! I know i would've been fine, but I also know everyone heals so differently!

Our other option is to fly out from Disney a couple days after the race to Texas and then drive down to Mexico ( same doc- diff location), but that involves an extra flight for 2 of us.

I need help figuring this out!!!

Ps. Sorry for the rambling : S

And thanks everyone!!!!

Heather

I think he would be up to seeing you run. Most people do pretty well after a week. Men usually recover quickly too. Congrats on the marathon! How awesome to run through Disneyland.

I don't know what your husband's general health is, but I had my sleeve on 11/25 (Friday), came home on Sunday, and stayed home for a week, but drove and ran errands. I went back to work the following Monday 12/5. I don't have high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes, but thought I'd share my experience. But--if you travel after the surgery, remember to take the Protein powder or get the bottled ones and have some broth available. It's tough to find liquids at hotels, etc.

good luck in the marathon,

c

I was able to lay on my tummy while at the park with my daughter 4 days post op. everyone is different, so you have to consider he might not be as fast as you, or he may be faster. consider how he usually acts when he gets sick. does he lay in bed and whine and require a lot of care, or does he take his medicine and continue with his normal routine. some people are just better with dealing with that stuff, or have a higher pain tolerance.

way to go on the marathon btw! what a wonderful thing to accomplish! good luck to the both of you!

(oh and fyi-when you are flying him home after surgery, make sure that he gets up and moves around every half an hour during the flight. this surgery puts you at an increased risk for dvt and so does flying)

At six days post op, I was back at work. However work was where I could sit and move slowly. I'm not sure that he'll have many opportunities to sit during the three hours you'll be running... You may want to research that. That being said, how exciting! :)

Does anyone know if you are supposed to wait a certain amount of days before you fly after surgery? We are heading to Florida about 3 weeks after surgery. I figure it must be ok since people fly back from having surgery in Mexico? Thanks!

Fern, Is there some surgery dates after your run? Then he can be with you and handle the surgery after the fact. Just an idea.

I'm not sure how to handle your dilemna as everyone DOES heal differently (quicker, slower, easy, tough, etc.) but I know I proabably felt close to normal about 10 days post-op.

Just wanted to chime in and say congrats to your hubby for wanting to do this also. My hubby and I are both sleeved and it ranks right up there with graduating college, getting married and starting our family...one of the BEST things we have ever done for ourselves!!!

Janet- there are some dates after the run, but it would involve an extra flight from LA to Texas as my doc (and what will be his doc) is stationed in 2 locations, and I'm not sure I could afford it.

I truly think it would all work out ok if he has surgery before the run, but the old "what if" is running through my brain. If he is not doing well, I would obviously forfit the race to take care of him. But I've been looking forward to this for 6 months ( since I signed up- but this has been a life goal since I was a kid!)!! I can't imagine how I'd feel if I got this close to my dream and could not do it. But my hubby's health is so much more important.

Can you tell that I'm confused : /

Fern, You might also try a different DR in Mexico. I went thru Belite and went to TJ and it was wonderful. Now my husband is scheduled to have his surgery Jan 26 in TJ going thru Ready 4 a Change. They all have been wonderful and TJ Dr's and hospitals are very good and clean. Cleaner than some in the US.

They take care of you from start to finish.

if he wasnt up to going to watch you.. why couldn't he just stay at home and put his feet up and relax. I know you probably want him there to see you but it depends on what is more important to you.. Secondly, there are a ton of half marathons all the time. There was 4 in my town this last month and I had no idea until i looked it up. so that might be the option.

If he is sleeved even on the 18th he can be up and driving on the 21st let alone by the 25th he should be fine unless there is some complication with the surgery.

Now consider which is cheaper a second flight or extra days in Disneyland or Mexico, where ever you plan to stay.

I think he'll be fine if he has somewhere to sit. I would not have wanted to stand up for three hours until a couple weeks after my surgery.

My doctor requested no flying for 6-8 weeks. Each doctor is different and this is probably a good question to ask yours. Good luck!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
