Stalling, Or Slowing At 3 Months Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

Ok so the beginning of my surgery was amazing! Everything went according to plan, the day I went in for my surgery I weighed 299lbs, and as of this morning I weigh 243, so that is a total of 56lbs in 3 months. But I Have only lost 6lbs in the entire month of November. I hit my 50lb mark on Halloween (Lost a total of 27lbs in september, and 23lbs in october). And it seems like it has just been barely coming off. It makes me so upset because I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I eat approximately 1000-1400 cals a day depending on how much Protein I get in, and I get in the majority of my Water.< /p>

On top of all this, my period is 2 days late, and I have been super hormonal/emotional/gassy/nauseous and I keep getting bladder infections. It's really frustrating. My husband just got home at the beginning of November (he's military) and I was on bcp and antibiotics at the same time, so I know a pregnancy is faintly possible, but my husband and I struggled for 2 years to try to get pregnant, when I decided to get sleeved instead, so I have little hope of an easy pregnancy. I took an HPT today and it was definitely negative. And I have had 3 cycles since getting sleeved all exactly 29 days apart. So I guess I'm coming at you guys with 2 questions. Is a 3 month stall typical, and can irregular periods randomly set on 3 months post op?

In my experience, yes, and yes.

I hit my first looong and frustrating stall at a couple of months out, and sadly have frequent stalls and fluctuations! :( It is so upsetting, and I'm also in the middle of a horrid stall (3.5lb gain, and no loss since halloween), and it never gets easier when the scale stops responding despite your best efforts.

What I can say from experience though is that even if its a slower journey than you hoped (not that you are going slow in my honest opinion, I'd only lost about 30lb by your stage post op), you will find you wake up one day and realise you have achieved things you never thought possible (for me it was getting to a normal bmi, and realising I am trying to lose weight now because I want to, not because medically I have to), and it'll hit you like a brick just how worthwhile your sleeve has been.

Also, I beleve I read somewhere on here that hormones can be stored in body fat, and so as we burn that at am unusual rate, we can have hormonal issues because we are releasing more into our bodies inadvertantly.

Hope that helps, and good luck, you will always find support on this site, especially when the journey is getting tough. x

Thanks soo much for your encouragement!! I have just been soooo incredibly emotional the week (i feel soo bad for my husband lol) I was just feeling so down on myself. I'm going to try kicking it up a notch and exercising more. Like I said my hubby just got back at the beginning of the month so I have been soaking up my time with him, and neglecting the gym. I do have to admit that I love the fact that Thanksgiving came and went and I didn't have to deal with the typical post-feast food coma lol. I do love my sleeve but sometimes I have this irrational fear that I'm going to mess up my tool, despite my best efforts.

I hate to sound long in the tooth, but I guess all of us on here as life long dieters have developed a mixture of scepticism (nothing else worked -why should this?), and low self image (I've messed up every other form of weight loss, eventually I must mess this up too), which have been ingrained and reinforced our whole lives, sometimes for me certainly, the biggest chalenge is my stomach was sleeved, but my mind wasn't.

Good luck on the journey x

Hello everyone,

I'm pretty much a newbie & almost a month out. Should I be expecting a stall/gain so soon? I must admit I did hv a few teaspoons of Thanksgiving food during my 'mushies' phase, but I still cannot get past 4-6 oz of food??? What am I doing wrong?

I am 4 months out and just went to my doctor yesterday. I have only lost 4 pounds in the last month, haven't cheated, but I haven't been able to exercise due to a strange pain in my back. The doctor told me that the wait loss slows up dramatically at the three month mark, but will continue to come off slowly. I had hoped to make it to 100 pounds less by Christmas but I suppose 70 pounds is not too bad. He did say that the back pain could be from a very low Vitamin D level. I don't know why it is low, I eat yogurt and drink milk and take tons of Vitamins, but will increase the Vitamin D and see how it goes.

As far as your period goes, I can't comment on that, as I am a guy, but I remember when my wife was on Atkins and losing weight hers really was messed up. I am sure that rapid weight loss will affect your hormones, that could also account for your mood being a little different.

Good luck to you.

Well that's normal to only be able to eat 4-6oz of food. 3 oz of shrimp and I'm stuffed.

Yea, but should I be experiencing a stall so soon post op??

I stalled at one week out for 12 days and then again at one month out for 14 days. I'm only 8 weeks out now and I keep wondering when the next stall will hit!

Each of our bodies handles this differently. Hang in there!

Thank you for that! I was beginning to think I was the only one or truth be told, I've actually started 'soft meats' before I'm really supposed to (I had a week left but was too eager) So I thought I had messed something up...

Hello everyone,

I, as well am 3 months out. In September and October I was losing

From 10lbs a month but November had been a tad but slower. Everyone is different but alike in so many ways. I fear I'm somehow messing up but still strive to lose weight. My doctor told me at my 2 month check that the first 6 months are critical. To try to take advantage of it. They also told me that it is completely normal to be hormonal and moody. There are hormones being released from fat so that is the culprit. Inclusively, I even had my cycle 3 times in November. Blah. Point is... Stay positive, motivated and confident. One day soon we will be in Wonderland!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
