Hubby finally agreed. I can start scheduling my surgery

Recommended Posts

First I want to thank you all for posting your stories. I would have never decided to do this without hearing first hand accounts. I have lurked for months.

Okay I have decided to go with Dr Kelly and want to schedule it for the 1st wk of Dec. Hubby gets back from an out of state trip the day before thanksgiving and I need him here to care for the kids.

Now I have a question: if I schedule the surgery for a friday, I would get to San Diego on Thursday (coming from El Paso, TX) than likey. By when do you think I will be well enough to fly home?? YOu think Sunday I should be okay or have to wait until monday? I am not scared. I heal extremelly well. When I had my daughter I had a csection on monday morning, was walking before the end of the day and was released the next day. My only issue is when they knock me out I get nauseous coming back up but I am sure they will take care of that.

So you think by sunday I should fly home or plan for monday?? I am just asking because we have to coordinate schedules and etc.

Thank you so much.

Congrats on your decision. I had VSG with Dr Kelly on Jan 6, 2011 - and it has been the best gift I ever gave myself! I made my final goal yesterday! Less than 10 months out and at goal - amazing.

I flew out on on Weds Jan 5th - had surgery on the 6th (thurs) and flew home on the 10th (Monday). I think I could have come home Sunday but it was nice to have one more day of Trish and Dr Kelly visiting me at Hotel Lucerna and taking care of me! I traveled alone - no problem what so ever. I was never really alone unless I wanted to be.

My only suggestion is take your time and take care of YOU. If you are going to get better rest at the hotel than at home (where the kids are) then stay until Monday. Dr Kelly really can tell you what he requires and what is optimal for best results.

I wish you the very best - let me know if you have any questions- Enjoy your journey!

I have a friend on OH that is looking for a buddy for the 2nd of December with Dr Kelly. She is coming in on the 1st and leaving on the 6th in the morning but she said thats just the way her flights turned out. From my experience I was able to travel in two days but I heal quickly. It all depends on your healing process. I think you should wait till at least monday. If you want a buddy just PM me. Good luck

God bless...

I am flying in on Monday Jan.2 for a Jan. 3 surgery with Dr. Kelly. I was given the day to fly back (I didn't choose it) home...it's Saturday, Jan.7. I hope that helps!

Thank you so much for the responses guys but I wont be able to do with Dr Kelly. Man I get my husband to agree work with his schedule, we will put dd in school and ds in aftercare for the week, I work through everything and now I won't be able to do with the Dr I want because of money. I got a quote from him for $5700 plus a plane ticket takes me to $6000. My budget is only $5k. No way I can do it now. I just want to cry :(

I heard about Dr Almanza and how he is cheaper so I stayed up way too late reading about him last night and this is what I found out:

1. I speak Spanish also so I should have no issue communicating.

2. I don't mind that its in a shopping center. S Florida and Houston has that a lot its very common.

3. I don't even mind that its a recovery house and you got to share with other people.

4. I know he is very experienced and does at least 140 surgeries a month.

The things I am having an issue getting over :

1. He only stapples. No sutures. From what I understand the sutures are better.

2. Beginning of the year he was having a problem with lots of people getting infection.

3. At the recovery house, I will have to wait a while to get my medicine and considering I get extremely nauseous and itchy because of anesthesia, I am expecting a horrible time.

So here I sit. I have no clue what to do!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
