After nearly a year, my surgery date is Monday, 10/10/2011. It's been a long year of insurance battles, tests etc, but it's time. I'm a 330lb, 49 year old male excited for my future.

Hey Glenn, our numbers were about the same. Read my blog www.kemo46.blogspot.com of the last 4 months of my journey ( my surgery was 5-25-2011). This will give you an idea of the upcoming events you will be facing. It is a great tool and life changer. Congrats on your decision.

Alright... time for an update. I'm 3 days out from my surgery. My surgery was done on 10/10/11 at 7:30-8 in the morning. We arrived at the hospital at 6 and went through the final registration paperwork. I was in my pre-op room by 6:15. The pre-op room consisted of getting an IV line inserted several different medicines administered as well as getting a shot for nausea in my stomach. I met with the Surgeon and the Anesthesiologist right before heading to the OR. Once in the OR, I was quickly put asleep. I woke up in the recovery room (sorry, not a clue what time) in minor discomfort and headed to my room shortly after. I spent Monday and Tuesday there and was sent home on Wednesday around noon. I have a drain installed that will be removed next week. I didn't experience very much discomfort or pain and barely used my morphine button and when I did, it was to help me sleep. While at home, I'm doing pretty well, but occasionally get some serious gas pains....they don't last long, but they are there. I have not yet weighed myself, but plan to do that on Sunday at the end of my clear liquid diet.

Something else I almost forgot to mention is that I asked my Surgeon it I could see the stomach removed from me and he told me no, it is sent off to labs for testing. So then I asked if it was possible to take a picture of what was removed. He was a little surprised by that and told me that he'd see what he could do. He presented me with an 8x10 photo that contained 4 images, 1 of the stomach pre-stapled, one post stapled, one of it being removed and lastly, the excised stomach. Pretty gruesome stuff.

Stay tuned........

Whoa!!! Your description really brings it home!! You sound like you're doing amazingly well. I watched a video of the surgery. That staple tool freaked me out! I can only hope to feel as positive as you do at three days out. Do you know, does everyone go home with a drain? I'm self pay and the nurse mentioned releasing me the same day. I don't know if I can handle that so I'm planning on staying the first night. I'm so anxious, but starting to get scared. I almost to the point of scheduling surgery. Prayers for your speedy recovery!!

I do not know if every patient leaves with a drain, it may be something that my Surgeon does to keep swelling down. I have to say....I really dislike the drain, but it seems to work.

The drain varies from surgeon to surgeon. Some surgeons never insert a drain. I had one, but it was removed as part of my discharge from the hospital.

I did not have a drain. It depends on your surgeon.. its a good preop question to ask at your consultation!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
