4 days post-op and RAVENOUS....is this normal???

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery four days ago. I was terribly nauseated the first day, and the second day I was just thirsty. By the third day, I was absolutely starving. I just didn't anticipate being this hungry. Is this normal???? I have been on Clear Liquids but got permission today to add the Protein Shakes back in. I'm so sick of shakes, since I had them two weeks pre-op, that I can't hardly stand to drink them. I have tried Isopure, but I really don't like that either. I'm one of the lower bmi patients, so right now I'm sort of wondering what I did to myself and if I should have just tried WW again or something. My stomach is constantly growling, I dream about food, and I literally almost cried from hunger tonight when my family was eating. Please tell me this will change as soon as I'm allowed pureed food.

It will definitely change. pureed foods helped me tremendously. Sounds like you might be having acid hunger. Did your doc prescribe you any acid medication? I'm on Prevacid Solutabs and they work wonders. Give your doc a call and good luck!

Yes, I'm taking an acid reducer. My doc also prescribed the Prevacid Solutabs, but my insurance wouldn't cover it. I had to get the capsules and open them. I have also taken another acid reducer that I cut in half, but I can't remember what it is called right now. I was hoping that was it also, but the meds I've been taking so far sure haven't helped. I'm going to see the doc tomorrow!

I was also on all the acid reducers. It's not the acid that makes you hungry anyway. They put you on those for healing purposes. I went through the SAME THING. I'm almost three weeks out and MAGICALLY, about 7 or 8 days ago, the hunger stopped. YAY!!!!!!!!! Now I have to try to REMEMBER to drink my Protein Shake and eat my tee tiny little "meal." It's WONDERFUL now. If you're like my sister and I, you'll be ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE for a few more days, but hang with it...it'll go away. :D

I agree with everyone else -its the acid! Don't force yourself to sit at the table and watch others eat if it bothers you - give yourself a break.

Also, try Isopure PLUS (not regular ISopure). The 8 ounce bottles either in punch or grape frost flavor. Tastes way better than anything else. Once I knew I liked it, I ordered it from Amazon.com.< /p>

I found that I could put almost a full scoop of Unjury powder into a 6 oz container of carbmaster yogurt.

I can't eat 6 oz of yogurt at one time tho- so I just split it and store in another container so I can have more later in the day.

Unjury vanilla Protein has 20 grams of protein per scoop.

Thanks for all the replies! Unfortunately, I can't have yogurt yet. I wish I could! I definitely don't sit at the table with the family while they are eating. In fact, I've made my husband cook every meal or get takeout for him and the girls since my pre-op diet started! I saw the doctor today and while I am having some acid problems, she agrees that it is mostly true hunger at this point since I'm not getting to eat pureed food yet. I did get the go ahead to add creamy Soups as long as I strain them. I have already had some mushroom Soup and that has helped a lot.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
