when was your turning point?

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks out today, getting in between 150-350 calories a day and exhausted all the time. I have a hard time taking time to eat because of the fact when I do I have a hard time meeting my liquids goal. I assume I am a lucky one who still has swelling in my sleeve. I can't drink the Protein as it makes me sick (physically) and all of a sudden in the last few days my Calcium is making me physically sick. I go this week to the Dr and nutritionist - even that has me exhausted thinking of it, a 30 min drive each way and having to actually get ready for my day early. I work from home and I can't get up and shower, that activity exhausts me also. I nap 2-3 times a day. When was your turning point? Seems like so many people say 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, seriously when will it get better?

I am 7 weeks today and I had my turning point at around week 5. I am lucky. I have never gotten sick but it too me until the end of week 5 before I could even think of getting more than 400 calories in. Although I noticed a turning point around week 5, I am still not getting all of my 90-100 grams of Protein a day. I am just now to the point where I can get my 64 oz of Water at day. Also just not getting between 600-800 calories a day. My doctors says it is a process and keep trying. Some days are easy to get close to the goal Water, Protein, and calories. Some days I can't even think about it. It will get better, just keep trying.

If the Protein drinks don't settle well try Proti 15 lemonade, grapefruit, etc. These have gotten me through. I can't stand the vanilla and chocolate drinks.< /p>

I am SO sorry to hear that you are having problems this far out from surgery, but I can certainly relate to it! I too had this bone deep, dead tired fatigue that seemed to plague me for weeks and weeks after my surgery. Since I am a nurse, and thought I knew so much, I only took 12 days off work to have the surgery. I am a Labor & Delivery nurse in a busy L&D unit, and for weeks, I lieterally had to drag myself to work and home again the next morning. (I work 12 hour shifts, from 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM) I was beginning to think that I would NEVER feel good again, and finally somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks post op, I finally started to feel better. I am sure part of the problem was my limited calorie intake. At first, after I started eating solid food I could only manage betwee 150 and 300 calories a day. It seemed that after 2-3 bites I was so full, and if I ate more, even one more bite, I was in agony for at least an hour or two. So I only ate a bite or two at each meal. I have never felt hunger since the surgery, but I sure do feel full quickly.

Anyway, long answer to your question, I "turned around" somewhere between the 6th and 8th week. Hope and pray that this is your experience also! Keep the faith, It WILL get better!

I became SEVERLY anemic after surgery and felt sooo much better about week 2 when I told my PCP and got on strong Iron supplements. As far as the eating, I was able to eat more about week 3-4 when i got off full liquids. You really can not get a lot of nutrients being on those liquids.

Believe us when we say It will get better!!

Kelly

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
