Difficulty swallowing pills

Recommended Posts

I am 2 months post op and have struggled taking my pills since surgery. I have a couple of things happening. This first is that I can no longer take lots of pills at the same time. I can only take 2 pills at a time and have to space them out about 30 minutes apart before the next set. ( I have about 20+ pills to take a day dealing with other health issues) The second problem is sometimes my pills just overwhelm my stomach and I start to dry heave and even get the foamies. Does anyone else have this struggle? How long after surgery could you take more than 2 pills at a time? Thanks!

I do! I'm only two weeks out, but man Its hard. I can only do one at a time. And they sit there and feel heavy. They fill me up. I'm a nurse and always tease my patients that they take so many pills they don't need a meal. Well seems that is true for us! I started my Vitamins today and my tummy is not happy!!! I am having some pain. Wish I had some great advice for you. But all I can say is take it slow like I do. Best wishes

Have you tried cutting the pills into smaller pieces and mixing them in applesauce? I am three weeks out and I can't tolerate pills yet. I have to crush everything or open the capsules and mix them in something. Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
