It's so good to hear your story, and makes me even more excited for mine! My biggest fear is the gas pain right after I wake up, hoe bad is it?? Soreness I can deal with but harsh pain makes me nervous. I'm also extremely horrified of the Foley catheter....I actually had one when I delivered my first child and it was not a pleasant experience. As a guy, I bet it was probably worse for you. As a nurse, I put them in people all the time! Still uncomfortable with having one myself...

lindsay, as you and I both know, guys are not as tough as woman when it comes to medical issues :-). The gas pain never got excruciating at all. I don't want to lie, it was uncomfortable for a few hours, but never unbearable. If they ask you if you want to get out your bed or sit up the night of your surgery, say yes. Even for 2-3 minutes. it will help with gas pains. Plus , you have your pain meds. I only hit the button 2 times over days. So I promise, it's very manageable. The put the foley in when your still asleep, so you don't feel it going in (which is the worst part) coming out its just discomfort for 5-6 seconds, Feel like you have to pee real bad. Over before you know it. Each day gets easier I promise. You remember how nervous I was? There was no reason to be. just expect discomfort and you'll be fine. Remember , this is major surgery . It takes a little time to heal. Be patient with your recovery and you'll be fine. Side note: The Unjury chocolate shakes have lifesavers with getting my liquid and Protein in. Takes me 30 minutes but that's are new meal time ;-)

Hi lindsay!

The only obstacle is getting my Protein in. They require 40-60 grams per day. Im getting better with that though. liquids are getting easier. The toughest part for me has been eating only liquids :-( I am getting so sick of Protein Shakes !! lol I've lost 17lbs so far!

The pain is pretty much all gone. I feel I have had a pretty easy recovery. some minor cramping feelings, but that's it. nothing too serious. The first 2 days are the most uncomfortable for me. after that. it's been smooth sailing

I get tired really easy though. It's a mixture of having very low calories with a big body. And my body still needs rest to recover

Oh, yeah, you must be tired! Are you able to take enough time off from work/responsibilities, etc? In any event, hope you are able to rest, rest, rest! B)

Oh that's good that you have some time to rest and adjust more to your sleeve. The liquid-only phase must be challenging! I know it probably seems like it's taking forever, but before long you'll be moving on to the next stage....yogurt! Yay!! (Hey, gotta find the humor in things.) But seriously, before you know it, all these food stages will be a distant memory and you'll be feelin' totally kickarse.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
