I was curious if anyone has had or heard of having a reaction to the staples used? I have not spoken with my doctor about it yet - and maybe it is not an issue, or even possible but I am sensitive to metal and break out in rash most often (earings have always been an issue, rings etc), So, I am trying to determine if I could have a reaction to the staples?

I need my Nut/Phys eval and I will have finished my requirements. Doctor will submit for approval as soon as I have finished with these last appointments and I am not sure yet how far off surgery would be.

Thank you if anyone has any information, I would appreciate it.

Sandy

I may be wrong about this, but typically when a person has a reaction to earrings or jewelry it's because of the nickel content of the items. The staples are surgical quality Titanium staples. Highly unlikely to have a reaction to them. I know I have a reaction to some jewelry because of the nickel content and I have had no problem with the staples in the 5 weeks I have had them. :)

Thanks Nancy. Good Point. Although the jewlery has been quality as well, I am certain it has hd some level of hard metal that could react with acid or somehting topically on the skin. As I vet through this process in making my decision, I just want to ask all questions that come to mind so I can be certain this is the path for me.

Good luck - wow, it looks like you are doing really well on your weight loss. Keep it up!

Take care,

Sandy

Good question sandy. I have the same reaction n my biggest fear is in regards to staples, leakage, infection, rupture.

I have the same issue with jewelry. If it isn't 24k gold, I can't wear it without it causing my skin to blister. I haven't had any issues with the staples or screws (hernia repair). I am 7 months out, so if it was causing a problem, I think it would have shown up by now... hopefully .

I am scheduled for 10/19 and am worried about the same thing. My surgeon is giving me a handful to tape to my skin for a while to make sure I wont have a reaction. Maybe you can ask your surgeon to provide some staple so you can do your own test.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
