Pre-Op Diet Mojo Needed

Recommended Posts

Okay, time to start the engine! I am starting the pre-op diet on the August 12th, two weeks and 6 days before surgery. Anyone have any hints or tips to get through it? Anyone want to commiserate?

P.S. Do most doctors recommend dulcolax or magnesium citrate before surgery? Does doing one or the other really make a difference?

P.S.S. What helped you most get through it?

I didn't have to do any bowel prep before surgery. All I had to do was 4 Protein shakes for 11 days with 6 other food items (broth, Jello, salad veggies) and Clear liquids the day before surgery. For me the hardest days were days 3 through 5 when I started having cravings. Other than that, it was pretty simple and I didn't have any issues.

What type of pre-op does your surgeon have you doing? Every surgeon seems to have their own plan.

 Yo! Stay away from the Mag Citrate...Yucky poo poo...(no pun intended). I had a lovely colonoscopy last year and the mag cit was REVOLTING! Not even 7-up - or gatorade could mask the awfulness...besides if you are going to fly anywhere...you don't want to take any nasty stuff the day before you get on a plane. Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
