did anyone else not do too great on preop diet?

Recommended Posts

So my surgery is right around the corner. I am super excited and nervous! My doc has me on a strict high Protein low carb diet. I am eating the right foods but I am not eating the right measurments. I am still pretty hungry after eating 4 oz of protein. Am I alone in this? Am I totally ruining my surgery? As I said, I am not eating bad foods, but I'm still being bad _shame_

Your doctor may be disappointed, but you shouldn't be. If you are eating the right things, that's the majority of the battle - I had been eating the right things, too - I had evolved into a good healthy diet over the years before surgery, but couldn't get the volume down enough to lose any more, which is why I needed the surgery. It's good to start the good postop habits early and experiment with new compliant foods - what Protein drinks do you like best, etc.

Some docs claim that they use the preop diet to shrink or prepare the liver for the procedure. My doc is a liver specialist outside of his bariatrics and he doesn't have a specific preop diet, so that should say something about the validity of that claim. I gained a bit in the month before surgery from the serial last suppers (we won't be able to eat here for a while, and as long as we're out for this preop medical appointment, why not...) and it hasn't effected my weight loss postop - I'm 2/3 to goal weight in three months.

Don't add any more stress to your life at an already stressful time (and hopefully your doctor won't, either)

Good luck with it all,

I tried my best to do what the preop required but did do a food funeral countdown, and had my favorite foods for dinner the week prior to surgery, because I knew it would be forever before I could even taste them again...I agree with previous post , they do sleeves on people with double the weight and the liver isnt an issue. Just do the best you can so you know what to do post sleeve.......But dont beat yourself up , theres a reason we all needed the sleeve. And even though your dates set doesnt mean theres a magic wand to stop our habbits prior. So enjoy some and eat good too

my doc put me on a high Protein liquid diet for 2 weeks pre op- i get sleeved on the 16th of august too. the diet sucks but the scale doesnt lie, lol. the only thing i have "cheated" on is with some sugar free fudge pops, 20 calories, but no Protein and im sure he wouldnt approve. try drinking more fluids when you get hungry instead of eating. sometimes hunger is our bodys way of telling us you need more h2o. good luck to you, and dont beat yourself up over it. you'l get there.

Thank you guys so much :)

When I tell others about the preop diet, they kind of scratch their heads like.... why would you be able to stick to a diet now, if it never worked before. I somewhat agree! I mean, I am not eating anything bad but I am not measuring my food either. Oh well, today was better than yesterday and hopefully tomorrow will be better than today. Thanks again!

my regular doctor had the same responce when he read my paperwork about the required weight loss prior to surgery. he was like, "isnt that the point, you cant lose weight." i was freaken out thinking he wasnt going to give medical clearance because he thought that if i could lose 10% on my own, then i should be able to lose it all on my own. i dont have a hard time losing weight, as a matter of fact i have lost a lot in the past. my problem is keeping it off. i always gain it right back plus a few pounds. just cant seem to keep with anything. i hope that i will be able to stick with this for the rest of my life and never have this problem again.

arent we lucky to live in a time when we can have some help with these things, and get on a websight like this and get the support that we all need. i have only been on this sight for about a week and im already hooked. i love that everyone is so positive and supportive here. i have yet to see one negative comment in here. its a wondeful thing.

Thank you guys so much :)

My preop diet isn't bad, but I screwed up the other day. I bought something I thought was sugar free until I added it into myfitnesspal.com. By that time, I'd already eaten it. It was "no sugar added," which is very different. Stupid labels.

Still, I have managed to avoid the "foods to avoid" on my preop diet list. My preop wasn't all liquid, so it made it easier to keep to it.

It was hardest when I was doing things that I used to eat while doing. We went to the races Friday and Saturday. I would normally be buying fried foods from the concession stand. Instead, I watched while my family ate the fried foods. Saturday, I brought raw veggies with me. I snacked on them whenever any of my family was eating the fried stuff. It helped.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
