Kaiser Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I received my pre-op instructions ( I will have the same diet for 3 weeks after my surgery):

drink 60 grams of Protein (shakes cannot be mixed with milk or milk products)

Clear broth

sugar free popsicles

sugar free Jello

non-calorie beverages

I thought that I could have the following products:

milk

the ability to add fruit to my Protein Shakes

Carnation sugar free instant Breakfast

Slim fast

apple sauce

I know I just have to readjust my thinking but I just don’t know if the items I can have will keep me full.

I start my liquid diet on Monday.

This week… I am trying to adjust my eating. I am having Protein Shakes with milk and fruit for Breakfast and lunch, can Soup, apple sauce, sugar free popsicles and a regular dinner without carbs.

Anyone have the same diet that I have...if so how are you doing? Any tips?

Thanks in advance,

Toyia

My doc had for day 1-10: flavored Water, tea, sugar free popsicles, fudgesicles, sf Jello, clear broth, crystal light, black coffee in small quantities (no cream)

By day 5-7 get to 40 oz of Fluid a day.

Start vit on day 7 if not nauseated.

chewable multi

B complex if not included in above

chewable Iron

B12 sublingual twice week

day 10-14

skim milk

calorie countdown milk

soy milk

low fat pudding

sf pudding

diet v8

lo fat cream Soups

natural apple sauce

get Protein up to 40-60 grams as tolerated

week 3 mushy

banannas

fruit to smoothies

baked sweet potato

oatmeal

cream of wheat

NO GRITS

I typed this straight from the printout he gave me. I actually moved up on foods a little quicker than what it says but everyone said NOT to do so before day 14 - which is the two week mark when the staple line is less likely to get "leaks"

funny how the different docs have different lists???

hope this helps

Hi Ann,

I had some bumps in the road along the way and I had to wait about 7 months to get my call...but I think the wait is shorter now.

Best of luck to you.

I am excited - Aug. 8th is the big day for me. My fingers are crossed and I hope I don't have any more bumps on this long road.

Did he perscribe you perscriptions right away...... question, was the delay due his scheduling? Now Dr. Cantor did say the wait is now about 2 to 4 months........ best of luck lady.

I have kaiser too. I am doing the liquid diet one week prior to my surgery and for 2 weeks after. They basically told me the same thing as you, but the dietician at the doc's office told me and my kaiser nutritionist told me to mix the Protein Shake with skim 1% milk becasue it will add an additional 7-8 grams of Protein. I would double check.

The Clear Liquids should just be the day before surgery and two weeks after. It honestly isn't that bad, just stay busy doing other things that day and you'll be ok. After surgery you'll be learning how to eat again and not much fits in your teeny tiny tummy so even getting in 30 ounces of liquid is hard, let alone adding milk or fruit to a Protein Shake. I'm two months out and still can't do smoothies they are simply too thick.

 The EAS shakes at costco are good, and you dont have to worry about mixing Water or milk.....Good luck on your journey and just take it one day at a time

Hi Ann,

I am starting the 3rd day on my pre-op diet. Right now I am drinking two Proteinblitz per day to get my 60 grams of Protein. I also have broth and jell-o. I talk a Multi-Vitamin, Vitamin D and B12.< /p>

I could have had my surgery on June 13th but due to work and bad communication with the scheduler at Kaiser I am finally set to have my surgery on Aug. 8th.

I have my pre-op appt with Dr. Cantor on Friday.

Hi Toyia! I have my surgery on 8/31 with Dr. Cantor. Jeanne told me that we cannot use milk products in our Protein drinks because the Protein Drinks should only have 5g of carbs per 8 ounce serving, and regular milk products (whole, 2% and 1%) all have too many carbs. An alternative milk product you can use if you have to have the milky taste is Hood's Calorie Countdown milk. It only has 3g of carbs (regular milk has 11-18 g). If you use unjury powder, that puts you at 6g of carbs if you make it with 8 oz of milk, but I make mine with 4oz of Hood milk and 4oz of Water so that I can stay under the 5g of carb requirement. Hope this helps.

Deevah

BTW - Congrats on ur surgery date! :D

Tina...I am so happy for you...please let me know how you are doing after your surgery. I will say a prayer for you today :)

Deevah...thank you so much for that information. I didn't know why we couldn't have milk. I know that each doctor is different and I was looking at posts from other people and I was mentally preparing myself for one thing and then when I received my instructions...I was a little sad... But, I am starting to wrap my brain around this whole thing... after months of waiting... this is really going to happen.

At first I was sad about my 2 week pre-op liquid diet...but now I think it is a good thing...I am going to have so many changes physically after surgery...and this pre-op diet is getting me ready mentally.

Toyia,

You are exactly right. This process def prepares us mentally for the changes. Good luck to you and I hope the Hood milk works for you.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
