Help making decision !

Recommended Posts

I had my band removed in '09' due to slip. I am about to be sleeved but need to make a decision of which surgeon. I had some tests done with Dr. Curry in Cincinnati and a scope and really liked him. He approved me for the sleeve. Also had to have some tests done at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr. Schauer.

He approved me for the sleeve as well. As you know we (revision) are more at risk for leaks and I cannot decide which surgeon to pick. I feel the same about each one and am pulling my hair out trying to pick. Any suggestions? Please help! Any advice will help me greatly. In advance, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The Cleveland Clinic of course is a bigger facility should there be any (God forbid) complications. The Jewish Hospital with Dr.Curry is a very small (but very nice) hospital with less chance for infection. The Cleveland Clinic is 4 hours from my home. The Jewish Hospital is 2 hours from my home.

First of all, congrats on getting approved for your sleeve. You are going to LOVE it over the band. It sounds like you have two very good doctors. I would highly consider going with the closer doctor. You wil have aftercare appointments and four hours seems like a bit far to drive. Have your researched their revision stats? That could help your decide, too. Good luck!!!

Go with the Jewish Hospital. Chances of leaks with us are higher, but still minimal. :D

Becca, Thank you so much for your help. I appreciate it so much. And thank you for the well wishes :) Yes, they are both excellent doctors. Yes I did research the revision and with the Cleveland Clinic being so huge they have done more there. Dr Schauer with the Cleveland Clinic has done bariatric surgeries for about 15 years (If I remember correctly) and Dr. Curry has been doing bariatric surgeries for about 9yrs (again, if I remember correctly) They are both excellent and centers of excellence.

Continued success to you!

KristeyK, Thank you for taking the time to answer my ? Yes, too bad we have a greater chance for leaks but glad it is still minimal. I am scared this time more than I thought because of that. But it's all in God's hands.

Continued success to you :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
