expectations....

Recommended Posts

This is probably unreasonable but I have to ask. I am about to be banded on Tuesday and my starting weight is 210 and am 5'3. I've been instructed to be on a CLEAR liquid diet following surgery for 4 long long weeks. I'll be off work for 6 weeks and am wondering if it's unreasonable to think between now and 8/23 for me to lose 30-40 lbs. Is this too aggressive considering the diet I will have to endure? Thanks for any reasonable feedback as I so badly want the weight to come off. I know I didn't gain the weight in 6 weeks and it will take much longer than 6 weeks to lose it, but I do want to see a difference by the time I go back to work. Are my expectations WAY to high? :help:

I think it is possible, but don't take it from me, I'm not banded yet. However, I did speak with a gentleman that was banded a month ago, and he lost 65 pounds. He was on liquids for one week pre-op, and two weeks post-op. He then went to mushies for week three, and finally to solids on week four. It is possible, but I think everybody is different and lose different as well. Just my 2 cents worth.

The post op period (and liquid phase) is mainly about healing, not weight loss. Any weight you do lose during that time is "bonus weight loss". The band is intended to be effective when you have restriction.

Good luck with your surgery!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
