Hair Loss After Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved less than a month ago so this isn't yet a concern for me, but have any of you who were sleeved further out experienced any Hair loss? I'm wondering because I haven't come across any black sleevers who mentioned anything in the hair loss threads that I've seen.

Hi Jackie,

Most of the hair loss problems I am aware of come from having the gastric by pass surgery since it has a significantly higher risk of malabsorption the the gastric sleeve..

I am seven months out and I have noticed additional hair shedding, but not a lot. It started about 3 months out and continues now. But again it is not a lot just additional shedding.

I think the Hair loss is due to the trauma to the body and the anesthesia. I say this because I experienced hair loss after my Tubal Ligation, which I had right after child birth. It was the only child birth (I've had 3) where I lost hair, so I think the surgery altering the body's natural function and the anesthesia played a major part of the hair loss. I also know a few AA sleevers who have lost hair after VSG, so I am just preparing to lose hair (I'm stocking up on wigs :D )

Hello!!! I'm 4 months out today and I've lost some hair -- not enough for anyone to tell who doesn't know me but I see it especially when I wash or condition wash my hair. I've been natural since February 2011 so my hair is holding up pretty good. I just make sure I keep my hair moisturized really well and massage my scalp daily. Hope this helps!!! Happy weight loss journey!:D

I heard the same about using Biotin to prevent Hair loss. Dose is 100mg twice a day. I started taking shortly after my surgery (8 weeksago) so far no loss yet. I wear Sisterlocks, so I would hate to lose them. (took too long to grow)!

I haven't had the sleeve surgery yet but I did have a baby last year. I had a tubal ligation with my c section and my hair shedded more. My edges even got thin but that may have been from braid tension. It shedded quite a bit but as u can see I have a ton of natural hair. I think it comes with surgery but it's minimal.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
