I really need some help!

Well...I just started my soft food diet. It's only day 3 and already I think I am doing things very wrong. My diet (given by my NUT) explains very little. It doesn't say how I should eat, when I should eat. And that's what I'm having trouble with. I still don't feel hunger so I don't know when to stop eating once I start! Because I'm deathly afraid of getting sick or throwing up, I take only 3 or 4 bites at a time. Then I'll take a nother few bites 10 or 20 mins. later. This is bad b/c it takes me hours to eat a meal (I still don't finish many of them although they are small portions). I feel like that's bad b/c 1, I need to get my nutrients and protien. and 2, it's like I'm grazing which I know I shouldn't do b/c it can cause weight gain. In addition, its hard for me to get all my fluids in b/c it takes me so long to finish eating and I we're not supposed to drink w/in 30 mins. of eating. I'm so bass ackwards right now I really feel like I don't know what I"m doing or what I should be doing to correct it. Someone, anyone please chime in and give your thoughts and suggestions!

It does take a while to get adjusted. I measure everything and when you are first eating mushies/solids you have to eat fairly often to get in enough Protein. Some people still have some swelling too. I used the timer on my phone to remind me when to eat or drink. If you use myfitnesspal on your pc or phone it helps you see how much of calories, protein, etc you are getting in.

First off, I don't think you can call what you are doing grazing--you are at soft foods and there is no way to meet your Protein goals without eating about six times a day. Try measuring your food--if you know you can eat 3-4 bites, try eating 1/4 cup, or if that's too big, 1/8 cup. Eat slow, chew well and pay attention to your tummy. Stop after 20 minutes. If it all goes in, that's your meal size, if not, stop when you feel it's enough. Different foods may fill you up differently. Then wait 30 min. and start drinking your Water. Drink about 2 hours, then eat again. Repeat until bedtime.

This won't last long, you will be able to eat larger portions soon. I still measure everything and eat about 1/2 cup of food at a meal, less if it's steak or ham. and I still have 4 meals a day to get the protein in. If you can get a Protein Shake in, that will give you a boost toward your daily goal.

Thanks for posting this! I am three weeks post op and felt like I was the only one dealing with this. I am just now able to tolerate eggs and soft chicken. I spoke with my nutritionist two weeks post op and she advised me to listen to my body. Go back to liquids if you need to. It worked for me and I'm still living! :) In my own way I understand the frustration. I'm praying that you find something that works for you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
