Gas and GERD -- Will it End?

Recommended Posts

I'm 8 days post op and suffering a lot of gas bloating and GERD. I am taking Omeprizol now 2X per day and eating gas-ex like candy. I am also being woken up by this.

Someone please tell me this will end soon.

It should get better, some ppl have to increase those meds a while. I take 2 at bedtime (40 mg) and occasionally 1 during the day. You probably have a lot of swelling in your tummy right now which can make these symptoms worse. It should begin to lessen aa the swelling goes down. Call your dr if this doesnt help, they may have to give you a different ppi.

I had really bad reflux before surgery and a hiatal (sp) hernia. My doc stitched up the hernia while he was removing my tummy. H sent me home on 20mg prilosec (i think that's what you're taking) 2x a day PLUS a 150mg Zantac before I go to bed. Apparently they are 2 different types of acid reducers and work together. As for the gas, try to take more frequent, but little walks. The walking helped me a lot. I'm just over 2 weeks post-op and I think I stopped w/ the GAS-X last weekend. The walking really helped! If that doesn't get any better, call your doctor and maybe he can up your script.

Thanks for the advise. I'll pick up another otc acid reducer for the two pronged approach. I've been back to work for a while so I'm moving about quite a bit.

I'm glad to hear it goes away. A doc told me some people can wind up with cronic GERD. That would be awfull. I think a lot of the gas might be due to the swolen and narrow sleeve not being able to vent air as stuff is swollowed. I just hope it goes away soon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
