1 week post op and starving

Recommended Posts

I am 1 week post op and was so hungry i went looking For options to eat. I found that some people were eating mushies so I tried tuna today. Now I'm freaking out. Anyone else do this? I'm a lttle scared that i will have complications.

From reading tons of posts it seems some doctors allow their patients to eat mushies (including tuna) one week out. Others keep their patients on full liquids for up to 3 weeks post op. My doc lets you go to mushies after 2 weeks. If you have not had issues already you will probably be ok, however, it is important to follow the plan that your doctor has laid out for you. I think the concern is that you will overfil or stress the stomach and "spring a leak". My doc said if I made it the first two weeks without a leak then I would likely never have a leak. He said that was the major "risk" of the procedure. Needless to say, I did't want complications requiring further major surgery so I followed the plan to the letter. I would rather be safe than sorry. It is too early to start "cheating" for lack of a better phrase. I don't mean to be harsh, but when you start feeling hungry have a protien shake, it is sure to cure your hunger! LOL, they are horrible aren't they. Good luck, please don't take any unneccesary risks, we have the rest of our lives to begin eating again. You can do this!

You should stick to your doctor's recommended food plan. Are you on a PPI? As the acid in your stomach makes you think you are hungry. If you are not on a PPI (proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole or nexium) you should take to your doctor or PCP and get a prescription. Note the PPI will take up to a week to show a complete effect. After two weeks on the PPI if you are still feeling hungry then it is most likely hunger.

Check with your doctor before you decide to jump from liquids to mushies! Your doctor can only tell you what is best for you and the sleeve that he has created for you.

I went exactly through this also, I know how terrifiying this can be. See my post, there is GREAT advise in there: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/17948-pushing-my-luck/page__p__150619#entry150619

Also, check with your doctor, I was eating the right amount, but I was waiting too long between eating. I was trying to eat just 3 times a day, when I should have been eating every couple of hours. Call your doctor and double check how frequently they want you to eat, but make sure you tewll them how often you are eating now. Neer be afraid to call your doctor/nurse practioner, they are quite use to having a new patient call at least once a week.

This is normal for some people what you are feeling, because I felt it. But just stay on your plan and reach out if it gets to be too much.

Best,

Steven

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
