I am from Newfoundland, Canada and they have just started doing WLS here is this province. In fact they are doing the first surgery today. I got a call today with my first appointment on June 16. It seems to take only a couple of months to the surgery here so I'm hoping to be done by early fall. The surgeon is new to WLS but is an excellent surgeon and very experienced otherwise. He has another Dr. here training him now. Its pretty scary having a surgeon new to WLS but I have no alternative. It is covered by my provincial governent insurance here and will not cost me a cent other than a little bit of travel which my private insurance will cover 80%. To go anywhere else would cost me thousands of dollars. I will be watching very carefully those who go ahead of me to see how they do.

Congratulations!! How exciting for you! It is scary to be one of the first to get a surgery but this isn't a new surgeon...he is just new to this procedure. If he is a good surgeon with a good reputation for other GI type surgeries you will probably be fine. He won't be complacent or bored and will be paying close to attention to you!! :D

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
